TY Trip to Dublin Zoo and The Bodies Exhibition by Roisín Kilmartin and Martha O’Brien
On Thursday the 14th of May we went to Dublin. We had an early start by getting
the 7.30 a.m. train from Templemore. We arrived in Dublin at 9 o'clock. We
then walked to Phoenix Park to Dublin Zoo. Here we had a great time! We saw
various animals. First of all we saw the tigers, the lions, the African hunter
dogs, and monkeys. We then went to the African Plaines were we saw giraffes,
zebras, elephants and ostriches. We learnt some common facts about each animal.
For example we found out that a giraffe is 1.8m in height, and an ostrich
can weigh up to 175kg. we also found out that an elephant can weigh up to
4000kg which is the same as 4000 liters of milk! We went to the City Farm
were we saw animals such as cows, hens, horses, donkeys, chickens, dogs and
also sheep. We left the Zoo at 12 o' clock and we made our way into the city.
We got 2 hours for shopping and this was very enjoyable for everybody especially
for the girls who shopped till they dropped! We all met back on O'Connell
Street at half past two. We then went to the Bodies Exhibition. This was
a very interesting and worthwhile experience. We saw a number of bodies that
had been preserved for many years. We saw a foetus at 4 weeks and 8 weeks.
We saw the bone structure of this foetus. This was very interesting. We saw
a smokers lung that was black as the ace of spades. This was shocking as
this was a serious case. Beside the smokers lung was a healthy lung. This
showed the difference between healthy and unhealthy lungs. This made people
aware of the effects of smoking. All theses bodies were dissected and it
showed the organs, the bone structure, the capillaries, the veins and arteries.
We then left after an hour, we got a further half hour break which was great.
We got the 5 past 5 train and we were home at half past 6. It was a very
enjoyable and interesting day had by all and we were all very tired after
the long day. We would like to thank Mr. Paul Fogarty and Ms. Kay 0' Regan
for accompanying us on our final trip of T.Y.
Guidance
Ms. Pauline Cummins and Ms. Mary Laffan from Tipperary Regional Youth Services
visited the school on Wednesday last to hold mock interviews for LCA 2 and
Leaving Cert students. Twenty students availed of this opportunity; each
student attended a fifteen minute interview which focused on the career and/or
course area that they are interested in. Students received a review sheet
as a follow up to the interview and all students were delighted with the
clear guidelines that they were given in relation to confidence, posture,
C.V., speech, eye contact, voluntary work etc. A word of thanks must be extended
to the two interviewers who put the students at ease and gave them some fantastic
tips to help them in the future.
On Friday last, Ms. Marie Tucker from North Tipperary VEC spoke to sixth year
students about further education and third level grants. The local authorities
have not yet received definite guidelines in relation to grant levels for
2009/2010; however students were given valuable information to focus them
on the application process.
YearBook

Our annual year book will be available in the school from Friday 15th of May at a cost of €10.Be sure to get your copy as only a limited number have been printed..

Rice Cup Quarter- Final
Hard Luck to the Rice cup team who were defeated by Thurles C.B.S. in the quarter-final
at Templetuohy on Tuesday last. Our Lady’s were well in the game until
the last ten minutes when the C.B.S. began to pull away. In the end the five
points that separated the teams did not do justice to the commitment and
skill of Our Lady’s team. The absence of James Bergin through injury
for the game was a big loss to us and may have been the difference between
defeat and victory on the day. Thanks to Mr. Seamus Bourke, Mr. Rory Purcell
and Mr. Jackie Walsh who trained this team.
Tipp Minors
Congratulations to Pa Ryan, Liam Butler, Andrew Ryan, Eanna Murray, Willie
Ryan and Dan Mc Cormack who were members of the Tipperary Minor panel that
had a comprehensive victory over Limerick on Wednesday last.
Athletics
Congratulations to Frances Nesirky , 2nd Year, who won a silver medal in the
Junior Girls’ 1,500 metres at the East Munster Girls’ Athletic
Championships on April 29th. This was an excellent performance given that Frances
will still be young enough for this event in 2010. Frances will now compete
in the Munster Finals in May.
Presentation to LCA 1 and LCA 2
On Wednesday last LCA 1 students were presented with their results from seession
one of the LCA course and LCA 2 students recevice the results of session three.
All LCA 2 students have performed well and are in line for a merit or distinction
as they face the written component of the LCA exam in June. Thanks to Ms Louise
Heaney and Mr. Jody Spooner who co-ordinate the LCA in the school.
April 30th 2009
Welcome Back
On April 20th the school welcomed back Principal, Ms Higgins who returned to
work following the birth of her daughter Aoife last October. In the coming
weeks Ms Higgins will be working closely with staff, parents and students
to ensure that the school continues to provide a comprehensive curricular
and extra-curricular programme in the face of the challenges posed to the
whole education system by the recent cutbacks announced by the Minister.
Corn An Phiarsaigh
Hard luck to the Corn an Phiarsigh under 15 hurling team who were defeated
in the Munster final by Blackwater Community School, Lismore by a margin
of three points at Cahir on Thursday last. Conditions were less than ideal
for hurling and a physically imposing Blackwater team got off to a strong
start. Two goals for Blackwater before half-time left Our Lady’s trailling
by seven points at the interval. In the second half, Our Lady’s made
a spirited comeback and in the end only five points separated the teams.
For Templemore , John Mc Grath and Joseph Hayden were most prominent on a
team that tried very hard against strong opposition. Thanks to Mr. Gerry
Ryan and Mr. Martin Bourke who managed the team.
Inter County Players
Congratulations to Liam Treacy (Loughmore-Castleiney) and Eoin Fitzpatrick
(J.K. Brackens) who were part of the Tippeary Minor Football team that defeated
Waterford by 1-15 to 0-6 last weekend.
Best wishes to Liam Butler (Moyne- Templetuohy), Pa Ryan and William Ryan (Clonakenny),
Eanna Murray (Templederry-Kenyons), Andrew Ryan (Toomevara) and Dan Mc Cormack
( Borris- Ileigh) who are members of the Tipperary Minor Hurling panel who
play Limerick on Wednesday evening in Limerick.
Team Samba
On Wednesday last over sixty music students took part in a Team Samba workshop
in the school GYM. Team Samba workshops combine a highly entertaining activity
with a practical team building experience. The workshop began with a short
introduction to all the instruments from Big Bass Drums to small Samba bells
to African Hand Drums, Irish Bodhrans , Shakers, etc. Then everyone chose
an instrument to play and within fifteen minutes all participants with their
different instruments were playing together. In spite of the high sound levels
all participants enjoyed the experience. Thanks to Ms Johnston who organised
the event.
Motivational Talk by Ms Cora Barnes
On Monday 27th students of 5th Year, TY and sixth year attended a presentation
by Ms Cora Barnes, Managing Director of “Three Q Catering” a Dublin
based recruitment agency providing personnel and other services to the catering
industry. Cora is a past pupil of Our Lady’s and in 2006 she was named
Dublin City Enterprise Board Young Female Entrepreneur of the Year. In her
talk Cora emphasised the importance for young people of taking control of their
own destinies, and of not falling into the trap of allowing the gloom and uncertainty
of the present to limit their vision of what they might achieve. She urged
Leaving Certificate students to plan carefully for the exam and approach it
in positive frame of mind. Thanks to Ms Boland who organised the talk.
Art Workshop
On Wednesday April 22nd, 5th and 6th Year art students, accompanied by art
teacher, Ms Mary Byrne attended an art workshop at The Source. The event
was organised by Tipperary Institute and given by local art teacher and artist,
Regina Dorney. All students enjoyed the event.

Tipp FM Star Search
Congratulations to Siobhán and Aine Bailey who have qualified for the
semi-finals of Tipp FM’s Star search which will be staged at Our
Lady’s this Friday night. The Bailey sisters were among four acts to
represent Our Lady’s at the quarter-finals on Saturday night last. The
other performers included the Templemore Pipe Band and singers Laura Greed
and Lauren Hogan. Well done to all who represented the school and best of luck
to the Bailey sisters on Friday.
Passover Feast (by Frances Nesirky 2nd Year)
On Wednesday 25th March 2009.The second year students of Our Lady’s secondary
school celebrated the Seder meal as a part of their junior certificate journal
work.
Since early February ,2 Aran, Durrow and Skellig have been working hard under
the guidance of their teachers, Mrs Harding, Mrs Cashman and Mrs Fogarty, to
organise and prepare the meal which is an important aspect of the Jewish calendar.
Preparation for the Seder meal which is a celebration of the exodus, included
researching and understanding the significance of the meal and how and why
different aspects of the Seder meal are celebrated.
The making of traditional wear such as kippahs and prayer shawls (tallits)
and special food including unleavened bread (matzah) , bitter herbs , haroseth
, egg, shank bone and greens. Each food symbolises a part of the story that
makes up the exodus.
The meal itself was held in the school gym,as there were over
a hundred people to be seated including student’s class tutors and
guests. Most of the ritual was led by Father Dunne who was a great help throughout
the whole process of preparation and especially on the night. All students
participated enthusiastically in the readings, blessings and even in the
Singing of the Hebrew psalms.
Altogether the whole event was an outstanding success which was enjoyed
by everyone-Matzeltov to all involved!!
Rice Cup Team Qualifies for the Quarter-Final.
The qualifying stages of the Rice cup took place at Nenagh on March 26th. In
their first game Our Lady’s suffered a 2-6 to 0-6 defeat at the hands
of Clonmel High School. They recovered in the second game and had a one point
victory over Callan C.B.S to earn a place against Thurles C.B.S. in the quarter –final
after Easter . All players contributed well to the victory over Callan but
J.K. Bracken’s Conor Bourke, Brian Kennedy, Colin O’Riordan
and Dylan Moloney and Templederry’s Dylan Carey were outstanding.
Best of luck to the team and to mentors Mr. Seamus Bourke, Mr. Rory Purcell
and Mr Jack Walsh in the quarter–final.
Panel:

Guidance
Over the last couple of weeks, sixth year students have attended presentations
from a number of colleges and most recently from Caoilfhionn Timmons, a past
pupil of the school. Caoilfhionn is currently studying Psychology and
Sociology in the University of Limerick and visited the school as part of
UL’s Ambassador Programme which aims to inspire, motivate and encourage
second-level pupils to realise their full potential by continuing on to Higher
Education. Caoilfhionn gave a really worthwhile presentation
to sixth years. She spoke of her own experiences at third level; including
time spent studying in Canada and her work as part of her co-operative education
in the research office in UL. Caoilfhionn’s presentation gave
the students a clear insight into the various aspects of college life.

Junior Basket Regional Semi-Final –v-Gaelcholaisté Carlow
Our Lady’s travelled to Carlow to play Gaelcholaiste in the Regional semi-final on Wednesday March 18th. The first quarter was very close with the teams level at the end of the quarter. By half-time Our Lady’s were leading by 4 points. The third quarter proved very fruitful for Our Lady’s where they opened up a 10-point gap.
Unfortunately, Our Lady’s failed to score for most of the final quarter and Gaelcholaisté seemed to score at will, scoring from every angle. The final score was Gaelcholaisté 28 Points and Our Lady’s 24.
Our Lady’s were very disappointed as they had lead for
most of the match and felt it was a game they should have won. However, they
can be proud of their achievement and hope they will go a step further next
year. Well done to the entire panel and thanks to Ms Fitzpatrick and
Ms Delaney who managed this team.
Team: Sile Keely, Emily Crawford, Louise Delaney,
Ciara Ryan, Aoife Loughnane, Loredana Sulas, Claire Fitzpatrick, Ciara
Bourke, Anne Eviston, Gillian Gleeson, Bridget Greed, Shauna Geary.
Panel: Maeve Bourke, Arelene McGrath, Kelly Doran, Emma King, Maura Bergin.
Entrance Assessment for Incoming First Years.
On Saturday last the school held its entrance assessment for incoming first
years. It was an early start for many students who were competing in Scór
na bPáisti in Clonmore on Friday night. In spite of this, all turned
up and completed the test. Our Lady’s operates a mixed-ability system
and the tests are used only for diagnostic purposes. Thanks to the students
and their parents for their co-operation. Thanks to Ms O’Dwyer and
Ms. Boland who administered the test. A supplementary test was held
on Monday for students from Lismacken and Roscrea who had Confirmation on
Saturday.
Seder Meal
Best wishes to students of Second Year and their R.E. teachers Ms. Tina
Fogarty, Ms Aileen Cashman and Ms Sinead Harding who host a Seder or
Passover Meal on Wednesday evening. This is a Christian version of the Jewish
Passover Seder, or ritual meal which took place traditionally on the first
or second night of the Jewish Holiday of Passover. The meal is organised
as part of the R.E project for Junior Cert. Students.
Pearse and Rice Cup
Well done to the Pearse Cup U 15 A hurling team who had a very well earned
victory over Dungarvan C.B.S. on Wednesday last. The final score was
2-10 to 0-10 in favour of Our Lady’s. We wish a speedy recovery to J.K.
Brackens James Bergin who was injured in this game. We play Charleville C.B.S
the semi-final this week. Best of luck to the Rice Cup team who are out in
the competition at Nenagh on Thursday 26th
March 21st 2009
Music Concert 2009
On Friday March 13th a packed house at the Templemore Arms were treated to
a wonderful night’s entertainment when thirty seven different acts
involving over sixty students from Our Lady’s took to the stage to
perform in the school’s music concert. The evening got off to a lively
start with the Traditional group playing “Rolling in the Rye Grass”and “Man
of the House”. This was followed by a variety of acts involving
solo performers, duets, the school choir and other groups performing
works from a range of genres and traditions. Congratulations to all
students who performed in the concert and to MCs Carol Hassett and Michael
John Carroll who moved proceedings along in a pleasant and relaxed manner.
Special congratulations and thanks to Ms Anne Marie Johnston who organized
an co-ordinated the event with such ease and efficiency and who did so much
work in the weeks before the concert to ensure that everything went well
on the night.
All Ireland Schools Hunter Trials
On Saturday March 14th the school was represented at the All Ireland Schools
Hunter Trials in Waterford by Naomi Scully, Anne Marie Sheridan, Thomas Brett,
Edel Moylan, Andrea Martin and Jonathan Lawlor. The competitors took
part in individual and team events and the emphais from the school’s point
of view was enjoyment and participation. Congratulations to all who took
part and well done on the spirit of co-operation and mutual support that
was evident among all who were involved in the event. Thanks to Ms Tina Fogarty
who does so much work every year co-ordinating entries and overseeing the
school’s participation in this event.
“Macbeth”–by Aisling O’Toole,
6th Year
On Tuesday 10th of March, 6th year Higher Level English students travelled
to Tipperary Town to see the Shakespearean play, “Macbeth”. Viewing
the performance is very beneficial for the students as it acts as a great revision
tool. Early Tuesday morning the students, along with English teachers
Ms. Cooney and Ms. Cashman, left for Tipperary Town and arrived at one o’clock
at the Tipperary Excel.
The
Long Overdue Theatre Company’s production of “Macbeth”was
excellent. “Macbeth”is one of Shakespeare’s darkest
tales, so full of evil and characters with hearts of steel, ambition-poisoned
minds and imaginations steeped in blood. The Long Overdue Theatre company incorporate
concepts of evil from around the globe into the telling of this timeless tale.
The experience was memorable and thoroughly enjoyed by the audience.
Witchcraft,
war, betrayal and murder are not the typical elements of an enjoyable evening.
The Long Overdue Theatre Company however, with its production of “Macbeth”,
puts audiences in the middle of a dark world where witches and ghosts are real
and battles happen all around. For sure, it’s an evening that’s anything
but typical.
The class thoroughly enjoyed the play and benefited hugely from it. I highly
recommend this production of “Macbeth”. It’s a perfect recreation
of all the things we fear, done in a way that you’ll surely love. We
left impressed by the dedication of actors to their craft and with the production
itself. From the dynamic opening to the shocking and tragic finale, this show
grips the audience and drags them along with Macbeth towards his destruction.
Overall, the
day was enjoyed by all. A note of thanks to Ms. Cashman and Ms. Cooney for a
thoroughly enjoyable trip.
Seachtain Na Gaelige
Well done to everyone who played their part to raise the profile of Irish in the school over Seachtain na Gaelige last week and especially to students who made a real effort to use Irish throughout the school. Thanks to members of the Irish Department who ran various competitions and events during the week. Galegeoir na Seachtaine will be named this week.
Rice Cup Challenge
The Rice cup team played a challenge game against Birr Community School on
Tuesday last. The opposition were a little stronger than Our Lady’s
because of the half year age difference but the challenge was a valuable
exercise in preparation for the Rice Cup which will begin soon. Thanks to
Mr. Seamus Bourke and Mr. Martin Bourke for their work with the team.
Junior Basketball
The Junior Basketball team continued their successful run with victory over Sacred
Heart Tullamore in the quarter-final on Tuesday last. They now go on
to play Gael Cholaiste Carlow in the Regional Semi-Final. Best of luck
to the team and to mentors Ms.Mary Fitzpatrick and Ms Eimear Delaney.

All Ireland Scholarship
Congratulations to 2008 Leaving Cert student Ciara Ryan from Clonmore who was
one of 120 students presented with a University of Limerick All Ireland Scholarship

scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic excellence combined with
other criteria and remain in place after graduation if a student wishes to
pursue post-graduate studies. The All Ireland Scholarship scheme is funded
by businessman, JP Mc Manus who has made €33m euro available for the scheme
over the next ten years. Ciara is at present studying primary teaching at Mary
Immaculate College. We congratulate Ciara, her family and her teachers at Our
Lady’s.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Mc Manus wished all the scholarship students well

teaching German to a group of 6th Class students. In the course of the project
the transition year students have improved their own German and gained
valuable experience for possible future careers as teachers.
Sport
Hard Luck to the Fitzgerald team who suffered an 11 points to 8 defeat at the
hands of a very determined Nenagh C.B.S. team at Dolla on Friday last. In spite
of good defensive work by the backs Nenagh had the edge and soon dispelled
any hope that Templemore would retain the title they won with relative ease
last year.
The under sixteen and a half camogie team had a useful challenge game against
Colaiste Phobail on Friday last. Our Lady’s lost a couple of players through
injury the Roscrea girls proved too strong in the end.
Congratulations to Stephen O’Riordan who has had a number of successes
recently at club and school level at the indoor athletic arena in Nenagh.
Congratulations to Thurles C.B.S. on their very convincing victory over
St. Caimins in the Harty Final. We wish them best of luck in the All Ireland

Congratulations to Yvonne and her teacher, Ms Mary Byrne and to Ms Cashman co-ordinator of the competition at school level.
5th Year Choices
Guidance Counsellor, Ms Therese Boland is working with third year students
at present to help them in their choice of programme and subjects for the coming
year. Students of third year have three choices –they can proceed to
fifth year, they can apply for a place in Transition Year or choose the
Leaving Cert Applied Programme. The Transition Year is not for everyone but
a large body of research exists to show that students who take this programme
are more mature leaving school, perform better in Leaving Certificate
and have lower drop out rates from Third Level courses. The Leaving Certificate
Applied is designed to suit a range of aptitudes and learning styles not catered
for in the mainstream Leaving Certificate Course. The school will host an information
evening for third year students and their parents on March 24th when presentations
will be made on the various choices available to students.
Music Concert
Preparations continue for Our Lady’s music concert which will take place
in the Templemore Arms on Friday March 13th at 8pm. This promises to be a very
enjoyable evening and offers an ideal opportunity to ease into
the St Patrick’s holiday weekend.
TL 21 Project
Teaching and Learning in the 21st century”was the title of a four year
research and development project conducted by the the Education Department
at NUI, Maynooth. The purpose of the project was to conduct research on new
and interesting ways to make teaching and learning more engaging for students
and teachers. The project was completed in 2007 and in the current phase
the project is being extended to schools that were not involved in the origianl
project. At present Mr. Paul Fogarty, Ms Aileen Cashman and Ms Alice
Cooney are involved in the TL 21 Extension programme and have developed a module
for use with Second Year English classes . The project commences this week.
Best Wishes
Best Wishes to Thurles C.B.S. who bid to bridge a fifty two year
gap by winning the Harty Cup this year and replace Our Lady’s as the
last Tipperary school to lift the trophy. The Templemore team celebrated the30th
anniversary of their famous Harty and All Ireland victories recently.

Microsoft Photostory Action Research
Over the last month students of 5th and 6th Year Biology have participated
in an Action Research Project for the Biology Second Level Support Service.
This was run in school by Mrs O’Regan and Mr.O’Brien. The aim
of the project was to evaluate a piece of software, Microsoft Photostory,
for use as a revision tool for the mandatory coursework of the Biology Syllabus.
5th Year students were responsible for creating Photostory presentations
of experiments which the 6th Years then evaluated.
The findings of the project will be presented at the Irish Science Teachers
Association Annual Conference in the University of Limerick later this year.
Many thanks to all involved for their interest and enthusiasm. Initial results
suggest that students found involvement in the project much more rewarding
than traditional approaches to learning
Web Cam Intercultural Linkup with Die Hauptschule Grosspetersdorf
Fifth year students of German at Our Lady’s had
a great informal chat with their German speaking counterparts in Austria
recently. This live chat from one classroom to another is certainly an authentic
way of learning German.
We discussed music, school rules, hobbies and films. The Austrian students
began with an orchestral performance. We responded with various pieces, including
Cillian Roche on tin whistle and Eanna Whelan playing Led Zepellin! Our claim
to fame of course in Templemore is that the lead singer with the no 1
Rock band in Germany, called Reamonn, is Ray Garvey who is a past pupil of
our school. It is interesting to see the Austrian students wearing casual clothes
in comparison to our uniform. It was nice to hear about skiing in Austria,
especially as we had snow here too!
All in all, students agreed that it was a most enjoyable way of learning German.
That is why we will link up again next month.
Second Age “King Lear”by Dónal Kennedy
On Wednesday 11 February, 5th Year Higher Level English students
travelled to Cork to see the Shakespearean play, “King Lear”.
It is the chosen drama on their Leaving Certificate course and seeing a performance
of the play acts as a beneficial revision tool.Students along with English
teachers Ms. Alice Cooney and Ms. Thérese Boland left Templemore early
Wednesday morning and arrived in Cork at around 11. 15 am. With over an hour
to spare, students and teachers alike went for an hour's shopping before
the show started!
Produced by Second Age Theatre Company, the play was a modern version
of the Shakespearean classic. It retained the original Elizabethan language
of the Shakespearean era while using a modern setting.
Lasting 2.5 hours, with a 15 minute interval, students enjoyed this vibrant
adaptation.
The "Storm Scene" was particularly memorable –with various
sound effects and a remarkable stage setting.
Overall, a great day was had by all. A note of thanks to both Ms. Boland and
Ms. Cooney for a thoroughly enjoyable trip.

French Exchange
We are delighted to welcome on Wednesday 11th, six French students
from Prémilhat who are staying in Templemore until Monday next. They
are Amandine le Bihan, Jennifer Vargas, Mathieu Cheminard, Amandine Dectot,
Clare Jouandaine and Ophélie Vargas. We hope they will
benefit enormously from their stay which will enable them to speak English
more frequently. Immersion in the target language is highly recommended
and our students found their visit to Prémilhat very helpful as well
as enjoyable. Our student hosts are Siobhán Bailey, Gráinne
Bohan, Eoin Hamell, Carol Hassett, Laura Greed and Sinéad Treacy.
The exchange has been organised by the French teachers in conjunction with
Town Twinning. Twinning facilitates such cultural and educational exchanges
and we hope such low-cost mutually beneficial trips will be enabled in future
years again. The French students will spend some time in classes on Thursday
and Friday and the remainder of their days with the host families, becoming
more familiar with our culture.
Athletic Successes
Congratulations to Frances Neserky on her great achievement in the Tipperary

one hundred and thirty seven runners she came home a close second. Best wishes
to Frances in the Munster Schools this week. Congratulations also to Frances’coach
Mr. Martin Leyden.
Congratulations also to Sean Kelly, Templemore, who won a gold medal
in the U15 Munster Indoor Track and Field Championships last weekend. We wish
him well in the All Ireland in March.

facilitating this worthwhile project.
Mock Exams
Junior Cert and Leaving Cert students complete their mock exams on this Friday
and will face into the Mid Term weekend in need of a good rest. However,
with only twelve weeks of school left after that, the Mid-Term week
itself offers a good opportunity to do some valuable revision and complete projects
and practicals for the Leaving and Junior Cert. Fifth year students
too have just completed a week of exams and will appreciate the Mid term
break.

Bank of Ireland Student Awards 2009
After many nominations in each category and an interview process,
the winners of the Bank of Ireland Student Awards 2009 were announced this
week. These awards are run in conjunction with the Student Council.
The Senior Sport Award was hotly contested this year with Liam Butler
emerging as a worthy winner. A talented footballer and hurler, Liam has
been playing hurling for Tipperary at minor level for three years now and as
captain of the schools Harty team, has been described by his team mates as “inspirational”. The Junior
Sport Award went to Ann Eviston who at 13 is one of the youngest recipients
of this award. Ann who hails from Loughmore excels at Camogie, Football,
Basketball and Horse riding and plays with the Tipperary U.14 Camogie team.
Donal Kennedy and Danielle Hassett won the Senior Academic Awards. In
this category, the judges were looking not only for “outstanding academic
achievement”but also “individual initiative”. Donal,
with his talent in music and significant involvement in politics, fitted the
bill as did Danielle with her many extra-curricular interests. Marese

wish them the best in the semi-finals against Blackwater, Lismore. Thanks
to our own panel for their commitment to training since September and to
Mr. Fogarty and his team for the many hours of work they have put into this

Athlone IT Talk to 6th Years
On Friday 16th January, Helena Kenny, School Liasion Officer from Athlone Institute
of Technology (AIT) visited the school to talk to sixth year students. AIT
has grown rapidly since it was established in 1970 and currently has 43 programmes
on offer through the CAO. The presentation gave the students an insight
into each of these courses which include programmes from the college’s
Business, Humanities, Engineering and Science faculties. Students also
watched a DVD which gave an overview of life in the college and the career
paths chosen by numerous graduates. The presenter also made students
aware of the support available within the college; including additional tuition
for first year students who may find a particular course difficult. Interested
students were invited to visit the college and attend some of the first year
lectures to gain a clear insight into what a particular course may involve. Helena
Kenny also spoke of the high drop out rate at third level and emphasised
the importance of students researching courses in detail.

Study Skills Programme
On Monday Night Mr Rory Mulvey from Student Enrichment Services made
a very lively and interesting presentation on Study Skills for
students to a large group of parents . He emphasised the importance for students
of developing good study habits if they are to succeed in exams. Ambition,
confidence and having clear plans, he said are really important in helping
students to focus their energies on the work they do. When it comes
to study, Mr. Mulvey said, quality is much more important than quantity. Students
must learn to work quickly and in a focused way. He advised that students
should work to a very specific plan and take short breaks in between. Mr.
Mulvey thanked parents for their attendance saying their presence was a very
positive signal to their children that they were concerned and interested in
their children’s education.
On Tuesday, the Student Enrichment team conducted the study planning programme
with First and Second Year students. Thanks to Ms Therese Boland who organised
the events.

December 20th 2008
Congratulations to Martin Bourke and his committee who organised
the 30th anniversary celebrations of the famous Harty Cup and All Ireland
Victories on December 6th. The evening began in Clonmore church
with mass celebrated by Fr. Pat Seaver, who was Principal at Templemore C.B.S.
in 1978. During the mass Fr. Seaver reflected on the manner in which the
progress of the Harty Cup team captured the imagination of the whole community
and on how basic and simple preparations were in those days. He recalled
with sadness the passing of Liam and Noel Farrelly who were members of the
Harty team.
After mass guests enjoyed a beautiful meal at Fitzpatricks and Martin
Bourke treated the audience to a short action replay of the key moments of the ’78
campaign. A presentation was made to each team member and Martin also made two
presentations to the school, a plaque to mark the anniversary of the victory
and a perpetual trophy to be presented annually to the sportsperson of the year
at Our Lady’s.
Well done and thanks to Martin and his committee.
Students in L.C.A. 1 carried out an interesting survey on parking
in Templemore on December 10th. The results were very revealing and
showed that 80% of people are in favour of paid-parking while 74% feel that
the new system has improved availability of parking space. A huge majority
of 74% would like to have free parking for 15 minutes while just over 50%
consider that the minimum rate should be less than the hourly rate of 50
cent.
The findings have been passed onto Templemore Town Council where the feedback
will be useful. The students enjoyed meeting members of the public and
recording their opinions. Many thanks to those who participated.
Madame Lamoine from Prémilhat visited Our Lady’s on Thursday. She is planning to bring some French students on exchange in February. They will be hosted by students in Our Lady’s and we expect they will spend a day at classes here just as our students did in Montlucon in May. This is an interesting experience for all of them to compare our educational systems. Meanwhile, Madame Lamoine took back some letters to our correspondents in Montlucon. These activities bring French to life in the classroom.
G.A.A

be shared between the Templemore Social Services and the Music Department in the
school.
December 13th 2008
STEPS Seminar
On Wednesday 3rd December, twenty-six senior students travelled to Tipperary
Institute in Thurles for a seminar organised by STEPS (The Science, Technology
and Engineering Programme for Schools). This seminar gave the
students the opportunity to learn about the world of engineering and technology
and the great opportunities that exist for engineering graduates. Three
volunteer speakers from different disciplines of engineering (Civil, Software
and Games Development) took the students through a day in their life as an
engineer. The volunteers also informed the students about their educational
and career background. This part of the presentation was really valuable
and highlighted that learning is on going and change is constant.
German in the Primary School Initiative
Four students in Transition Year have become teachers for a day, as part of
their enterprise project. They were kindly allowed to visit St. Joseph’s
National School in Templemore last week, where they taught the sixth class
German. They had prepared power point communication dialogues and "Landeskunde" information
on German culture. They really enjoyed working with the students and especially
using an interactive whiteboard. The transition year students will enter
this enterprise project in the MLPSI initiative supported board! It is not
surprising that the title of the programme is"Viel Spass!" ie have
fun! by the Goethe Institute in Dublin. MLPSI is an initiative to foster
the learning of language in primary schools.
Tipperary Institute Talk
Thanks to Ms Anne Mc Bride and Mr Philip Bourke from Tipperary Institute who
addressed sixth year students on Friday December 5th. The speakers gave a
comprehensive presentation on the range of courses available at Tipperary
Institute.
LCA Visit to Templemore Library
Students from L.C.A. 1 had a wonderful treat as part of their visit to Templemore
Library on November 20th, when renowned author, Frank Delaney, addressed
an audience there.
Having read an excerpt from his novel “Tipperary”, he then responded to questions from the audience. He recalled listening to conversations from beneath the parlour table, memories of which eventually found their way into his novels. He based his main character in “Tipperary”on a granduncle of his and feels that works of fiction involves a seamless interweaving of fact and imagination.
Congratulations to Tipperary County Libraries for having arranged the visit. Our students were very fortunate to hear such a famous author, with Tipperary roots, on our doorstep and very much appreciated the opportunity to become acquainted with his work. Their library visit proved not only informative but interesting and entertaining.

After victories over Abbey C.B.S., Nenagh C.B.S and Thurles C.B.S, Our Lady’s
First Year Corn Ui Chatháin team qualified to meet Clonmel High School
in the final at Littleton on November 28th. Two very even teams produced an
exciting game of hurling that finished level at full time. In extra time High
School’s greater physical strength made the difference and Our Lady’s
were unlucky to lose by four points. In the final, Colin O’Riordan, Thomas
Brett, Dylan Carey, Gary Russell, Dylan Moloney, Jason Ryan and goalie, Shane
Ryan were most prominent on a team that gave everything in pursuit of victory.

Cadet Basketball
Hard Luck to the Cadet basketball team who were defeated in the Regional semi-final
by Sacred Heart Tullamore on Thursday 27th. Our Lady’s qualified for
this game after defeating a very strong Heywood team last week. The loss
of Claire Fitzpatrick through injury in the early stages of the game proved
costly and in spite of a spirited team performance from all Our Lady’s
players the final score was 25 -10 in favour of Tullamore. Well done to the
team and to Ms. Fitzpatrick.
Under 16 ½ Ladies’Football.
Hard luck to the Under 16 ½ Ladies Football team who were beaten by
Rathkeale in the semi-final of the Munster Series on 26th of November. Two
early goals from a skilful Rathkeale team left Our Lady’s with too much
catching up to do but they battled it out to the end. The final score was 4-6
to 1-2. Thanks to Ms. Kay Walsh who coached this team. Team: Louise Delaney,
Maura Bergin, Arlene Mc Grath, Shauna Geary, Martha O’Brien, Ciara

experienced Proposition.

final this Friday.
Harty Cup Team Qualify for Quarter-Final.
On Wednesday, November 12th the Harty Cup team travelled to Mitchelstown
to play Carrigaline in the last group game of the competition. Victory was
needed to qualify. Our Lady’s started slowly and only staunch defending
from the full-back line of Pio Kennedy, Liam Butler and Pa Ryan kept the Cork
team from taking control. In the first half too, goalie, Martin Kelly was tested
regularly and made a number of fine saves. At centre-field Eanna Murray was
dominant but the forwards found it hard to penetrate the Carrigaline defence.
The half-time score of 0-9 to 0-9 was a fair reflection on the game to that
point. In the second half Our Lady’s took the initiative and moved
a couple of points ahead. Aidan Fogarty’s move to wing forward brought
a sense of urgency to our forward play and a goal from on form Eoin Fitzpatrick
brought his tally for the game to 1-4 and ensured Our Lady’s a place
in the knockout stages after Christmas. Team: Martin Kelly (Moyne-Templetuohy),
Pio Kennedy (Templederry) Liam Butler (Moyne-Templetuohy), Pa Ryan (Clonakenny),
Andrew Ryan (Toomevara), Willie Ryan (Clonakenny) Henry Maher (Loughmore-Castleiney),
Liam Treacy (Loughmore-Castleiney), Eanna Murray (Templederry), Pa Lupton (Drom-
Inch), Kevin Johnston (Loughmore-Castleiney), Eoin Fitzpatrick (J.K. Brackens),
Aidan Fogarty (J.K. Brackens) Dan Mc Cormack (Borris - Ileigh )
Willie Eviston (Loughmore- Castleiney). Subs: Liam Mc Grath (Loughmore-Castleiney),
for Pa. Lupton. Congratulation to the team and to Manager Mr.Noel Fogarty and
coaches Mr. Sean Johnston and Mr. Jack Walsh.
LCA Visit to Delphi
Students from LCA 1 and LCA 2, accompanied by Mr Teresa Brennan and Ms Mary
Fitzpatrick spent the first three days of last week at Delphi Outdoor Pursuits
Centre in Co. Mayo. They were lucky to be the only school there for those
three days and had had unlimited access to the facilities at the centre.
The weather was good and the group found the experience really challenging
but very tiring. They returned on Wednesday evening and for most it was home
for a shower and a good rest after the strenuous three days, but for Jane
Tormey it was straight into a full dress rehearsal for the musical. Thanks
to Ms Fitzpatrick and Ms Brennan who accompanied the group.
On Tuesday November 18th Out Lady’s Cadet team travelled to Heywood to play Heywood Community College in the Regional ¼ final.
Our Lady’s started very well and raced into an early
12 point lead. Heywood fought their way back into the game but couldn’t
make up the deficit against a skilful, determined Our Lady’s team who
ran out winners on a scoreline of 47 points to 24. This was a great
team performance but Karen Costigan was again outstanding in defence while
also contributing 8 points and Claire Fitzpatrick who had an excellent game
scoring 24 points.
Our Lady’s now play Sacred Heart Tullamore in the semi-final to be played
next week.
Team: Aoife Ryan, Marese O’Connell, Karen Costigan, Claire Fitzpatrick,
Rebekah Carroll, Mairead Delaney, Ciara Bourke, Marie Sheedy, Gráinne

Business degrees as well as the possible career paths arising out of these
programmes. The students were also reminded of the importance of researching
courses in detail prior to the completion of the CAO form.

Death of Christian Martin
Students and staff at Our Lady’s are still coming to terms with the tragic
death on Wednesday last of Christian Martin from Clonmore who did his Leaving
Cert. in June. Christian is remembered as a quiet-spoken and gentle student
who always gave his best to his work and earned the affection of his teachers
and his fellow students. A prayer service was held following news of Christian’s
death and a book of condolence was opened at the school. On Sunday, students
and staff formed a guard of honour after the funeral mass mass. We offer our
sincere sympathy to Christian’s parents Anna and P.J. and to his sister
Andrea who is a second year student at the school.
Grease
After many weeks of preparation the students of Our Lady’s will present Greaseon
Thursday and Friday night this week. We appeal to all parents and family members
to come along and support the very talented group of young actors who have
worked so hard to ensure that all who come to the show will be
guaranteed a good night’s entertainment. On Thursday morning over
five hundred students from the surrounding primary school will attend the matinee
at Our Lady’s. We wish best of luck to all the cast, to the production
team of Giada Orlandi and Geraldine Delaney, to Ms Ann- Marie Johnston , Mr.
Paul Fogarty and other staff members who have put so much hard work into the
production.
First and Second Year Camogie Blitz
The First and Second Year Camogie players travelled to Cahir on Friday last,
Nov. 7th for the annual Blitz. Hopes of retaining the trophy our Lady’s
won last year were dampened before the competition began by the absence,
through illness of star full back , Louise Delaney. After a draw with Roscrea
followed by victories over Cahir and Nenagh we lost out on score difference
to Roscrea for a place in the final against Borrisokane. Hard luck
to the team and to coach, Ms Teresa Brennan and assistant, Eimear Delaney.
Team: Gillian Gleeson, Fiona Treacy, Ciara Bourke, Claire Fitzpatrick, Ciara
Ryan, Shiela Keely, Shauna Geary, Maeve Bourke, Ann Eviston, Loredans Sulas,
Cirar O’Toole, Arlene Mc Grath, Bridget Greed, Maura Bergin,

Well done to the First Year Hurlers on their 1-4 to 0-4 victory over Nenagh
C.B.S. in the semi- final of the Corn Ui Chatháin, First Year Hurling
competition and to managers Mr. Seamus Bourke and Mr. Rory Purcell. The
team now plays Thurles C.B.S. in the semi-final at Templetuohy on Tuesday,
November 11th.

of Fermoy in preparation for the final group game on Wednesday November12th
against Carrigaline.

of school policy.

Grease the Musical 2008
It is that time of year again when the annual school musical takes place at Our Lady’s Templemore. This year, students are putting their efforts in to a production of “Grease”, the musical by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey. The show will be staged in the school gym on November 13th and 14th and tells the story of how rock and roll changed American youth culture during the pivotal moment when America took its first tentative steps out of the conformity and social/sexual oppression of the 1950s and towards individual freedom in the 1960s. The Musical takes its name from the 1950s United States’working-class youth sub-culture known as greasers. It is set in 1959 inh te fictional Rydell High School in Chicago and follows ten working class kids as they navigate the complexities of growing up in this changing world.
Musical producers Giada Orlandi and Geraldine Delaney set about their task in early September with ‘X-Factor’style auditions. There was a great “buzz”around the school at this time as everyone was looking forward to the musical and competing for lead roles in the show. When the auditions were over, both Giada and Geraldine selected the following main cast for the show:
Danny: Eoin Hamill
Keneckie: Steven O’Riordain
Sonny: Robert Barry
Roger: Dominic Gallagher
Doody: Tommy Mallen
Eugene: Stuart Gallagher
Sandy: Emer Shelly
Rizzo: Lauren Hogan
Jan: Siobhan Bailey
Marty: Aisling O’Shea
Frenchy: Carol Hassett
Cha Cha: Nicola Ryan
Patty Simcox: Emma King
Mrs Lynch: Danielle Hassett
Teen Angel: Áine Bailey
Rehearsals have been underway for the past two months with many students putting long hours and significant time at mid term in the school gym. This week in the school there is a great sense of excitement and anticipation as students perfect their roles and strive towards a dress rehearsal later this week. Students are looking forward to the show and they are going to try and make this the best musical production of Grease that has been in the school yet! So why not come along to Our Lady’s Templemore on Thursday 13th or Friday 14th of Nov ( See Advert)
French Trip to Paris
On Thursday 23rd October, thirty-three students and five teachers from Our
Lady’s left Templemore at 7.am. for Paris. The group arrived
in Beauvais airport at 2 p.m., where they were met by Christophe, their coach
driver for the duration of the trip. The first event was a guided tour
of Paris, taking in famous sites such as Notre Dame, Champs Élysées,
Arc de Triomphe and the Eiffel Tower. Later that evening the group
enjoyed a boat trip on the Seine. Friday morning was spent visiting
the Louvre, Notre Dame, Montmartre and Sacré Coeúr where many
students sat while artists worked on their portraits. Friday
ended with a walk along the Champs Élysées. On Saturday
there was a very interesting visit to the Roland Garros stadium where the
French Tennis championships take place. The guide took the party on
a tour of the stadium including the museum and press interview area. On
Saturday afternoon there was a trip to Marne –La –Valtee for
some French retail therapy followed by bowling. On Sunday the group
set off early for Euro Disney where students got to meet Mickey and Minnie
Mouse and various other Disney characters. A very enjoyable day was
had by all, The highlight being the Halloween show and parade. Monday
morning the group arrived in Beauvais at 10. a.m. for the return flight to
Shannon. We thank Ms. Harding and Ms Griffin who organised the trip
and Ms Johnston, Ms Fogarty and Mr. O’Brien who accompanied them on
the tour. Well done all students for their exemplary behaviour throughout
the trip.
IFA Know Your Foot Trip To Brussels
A group of Four students from Our Lady’s accompanied by parent, Mr. Paddy
Kennedy were guests of the Irish Farmers Association on a Trip to Brussels
last week. This was the prize for winning the IFA “Know your Food Competition”earlier
this year. The students were Dónal Kennedy, Padraic Ryan, Frankie Kennedy
and David Murphy. The following account of the trip is by Frankie Kennedy,:
Day 1:
At 1 o clock we left the Anner Hotel in Thurles on a bus to Dublin airport.
We arrived at the airport at around 3 o clock. We did our airport shopping
and all the rest and then boarded the plane at 5 45. The plane took off at
6 and we arrived at Brussels airport about an hour later. We travelled
by an inner city train to the centre where our hotel was. The name of the hotel
was The Marriott and it was a 5 star hotel and it was nearly right in the centre
of the city. Our rooms wereon the executive floor, we had an executive lounge
where we could take anything we wanted, go on the internet and it was where
we got our breakfast. We arrived at the hotel around 10.30 and we checked in
a relaxed for the evening.
Day 2:
This was an early enough start, we were up for 8 o’clock and we had our
breakfast. We got time to get ready and then we left for our tour of the European
Parliament. This was very interesting, we were shown all around, it was a quite
week so there were not many people around. We talked to another woman from
Dublin for a while discussing our projects and how exactly we got the trip.
We spent 3 hours in the parliament and then we went to an Italian restaurant.
We were given very unusual starters most of which we had never seen before.
Some was nice while others not so nice. For the main course we were given lasagne
which was very nice. We then went to the I.F.A. offices in Brussels where we
had another short meeting and got a couple of photos taken. After this we went
on an open top tour of the city of Brussels where we got to see all of the
sites of the city. After this we had time to go do what we wanted, we went
off shopping for a few hours and then came back for our dinner. We ate our
dinner and then relaxed and chilled out for the night.
Day 4:
We woke up at 5 o’clock and we got our breakfast, we left for the airport
to Milan at 6 where we took the inner city train. This had a few delays but
thankfully we made our flight. Our flight departed at 9 o clock and we arrived
in Milan at half 10. We got a bus from the airport to the train station, the
train station was massive, it is one of the biggest in Europe. We got a two
hour train journey to Parma. Parma was a fairly quiet city. The hotel here
was a 3 star and was very nice also. We went to E.F.S.A. or as it’s called
the Europeen Food Safety Authority. We were given a tour around the building
and they explained to us what their role, structure and purposes were. When
we had finished here it was about 8 o clock so we went out for dinner in an
Italian restaurant . We got lasagne again and it was very nice. After this
we walked around Parma and then made our way back to the hotel and went to
bed for the night.
Day 5:
We travelled back early on the train to Milan where we spent our last
day. We stayed in a four star hotel in Milan which was a 15 minute walk from
the centre of the city. We were given this last day to go site seeing. We visited
all the major sites like churches and castles and around the square where we
took in the great atmosphere, we also went shopping in the city, most shops
were expensive but there was some very nice clothes. After the day of site
seeing we got a three course dinner in the hotel. It was very nice, for the
1st course some of us got lobster and for the main course a lt of people had
the steak and for desert there was a chocolate slice. This dinner ended at
11 o clock and we thanked the people in charge and then went to bed.
Day 6:
This was the day we went home. Our flight left at 12 o clock, we left Milan
at 1.30 on our 2 hour flight home to Dublin. We got a bus home back to the
Anner hotel. This was the end of our trip. We all really enjoyed the trip and
thought it was really well planned and that it was a great experience for all
concerned. We would like to thank Morag Devins and the IFA for organising the
trip and looking after us so well.

first League game against Tullamore College last week. Our Lady’s
dominance was not reflected in the first quarter score of 10 points to
6 in favour of Our Lady’s . A change in defence in the second quarter
saw Our Lady’s take control of the match and they ran out easy winners
on a scoreline of 48 points to 10. The next game is against Borrisoleigh
on October 16th. Well done to the team and to Coaches, Ms. Teresa
Brennan and Ms Fitzpatrick.

Harty Cup ( Report by Stephen Russell, TY)
The Harty cup began on the eighth of October with a match against Doon CBS
in Cashel. Doon got off the mark first with a pointed free after three minutes.
Our lady’s replied with three quick points from Dan McCormack, Aidan
Fogarty and Liam McGrath before Paddy Nolan had to make a fine save to keep
Our lady’s in the lead. In the last ten minutes of the first half Our
lady’s pulled away to leave it nine points to three at half time.
Congratulations to the team and to managers Mr. Noel Fogarty and Mr. Sean Johnston.
The second half turned out to be disappointing with Doon on top but they failed to convert their domination into scores. The Our lady’s full back line of Pa Ryan, Liam Butler and Pio Kennedy performed well throughout. Others to contribute well were Wily Ryan, Eanna Murray and Aidan Fogarty. Our lady’s eventually ran out winners by 1-7 to 0-14.
Our lady’s team: Paddy Nolan, Pa Ryan, Liam Butler, Pio Kennedy, Henry Maher, Willie Ryan, Andrew Ryan, Liam Treacy, Eoin Fitzpatrick, Eanna Murray, Dan McCormack, Aidan Fogarty, Liam McGrath, Kevin Johnston, Willlie Eviston. Subs: Keith Kennedy.

when they defeated Thurles C.B.S. on Thursday last. It was a good team
performance but Colin O’Riordan, Matt Stapleton and John Joe Ryan deserve

Delphi Trip by Martha O’Brien and Aine Bailey
On the 24th of September 2008, 20 Transition Year students accompanied by Ms
Breda Maher and Ms Mary Lou Carroll headed to Delphi adventure centre, Co.
Mayo, for a three day excursion. We left Templemore at 9.30 and arrived at
Delphi at 1.45pm.
Our first event was orienteering. It was a hard task as the placement of the
keys was hard tofind. The “Mary Lou”consisting of Stephen Shanahan,
Robert Barry, Stephen Russell, and Patrick Brett came first out of five
teams, winning in fifty minutes.
At five o’clock we got an hour’s free time and we relaxed
in our rooms until dinner time.
At six o’clock we went for dinner. The evening activity was hillwalking
with our instructor, Brian. This was one of the highlights of the trip
because at least five people got extremely dirty from falling into swamps and
pools of muck and were made go into a river to clean them before returning
to the centre.
On Thursday and Friday we had the same routine regarding food and chill-out
time. We were split into two groups for the morning activities which were rock
climbing and high ropes. The rock climbing was indoors and it was an enjoyable
experience. The other activity was high ropes. This consited of an obstacle
course, 25ft above the ground. It involved going through a tunnel and doing
a type of tight rope exercise. Most of the boys did this activity whereas in
the girls’section only three out of the eight did it. These were Aine
Bailey, Ann- Marie Sheridan and Roisín Gilmartin. We returned
to the centre where we had out lunch of fish fingers, beans and bread.
In the afternoon, we went surfing This was very enjoyable and everyone joined
in. We were show how to surf using surf boards. We stayed here
for about an hour and a half an we returned to the centre for dinner.
That evening we played basketball for about an hour and then we went to a conservatory
where we met students from other schools. We bonded well and made many new
friends.
On Friday morning, we went kayaking. Only five of the group: Keith Kennedy, Richard
Maher, Jamie Moloney, Aine Bailey and Ann Marie Sheridan took part.
The rest of the group didn’t have any spare clothes so they didn’t
want to get wet. We returned to the centre at 1.30pm and made our way back
to Tipperary. We stopped in a village called Craughwell to get something to
eat and to relax for a while. We arrived back in Templemore at 5.45pm.
Delphi was a very enjoyable and memorable experience. We would like to thank
Mrs. Breda Maher and Mrs. Mary Lou Carroll for their kindness and for taking
time away from school and their families to travel with us in this trip.
Harty Cup
The Harty team played two challenge games this week, one against Cistercian
College and one against Thurles C.B.S. On both occasions, managers, Mr. Fogarty
and Mr. Johnston played experimental teams but were happy with the performances.
The first game in the Harty Cup will take place on October 8th against Doon
C.B.S.
French Film

Mass for Beginning of the School Year
The Annual Mass for the opening of the school year took place in the parish
church on Friday September 19th. The celebrant was Fr. Tom Dunne who praised
the students of Our Lady’s for their reverence and participation in the
mass. He urged them to face the new school year with optimism and confidence.
As usual, the music and hymns chosen by the Ms Johnston and the school choir
added greatly to the occasion. Thanks to the R.E. team who worked hard
to make the mass a meaningful celebration for all students and staff.
Annual Funwalk
The School’s Annual funwalk around Cluan took place on Friday afternoon
last. We were lucky to have really nice weather for the occasion again this
year. The proceeds of this event are used to cover the cost of running the
school’s busy games’programme, including the increasing cost of
hiring buses for away sporting fixtures. Thanks to all students who worked
hard to make the event a success. Thanks especially to parents and members
of the community who supported our street collection on Friday or gave sponsorship.
Medal Presentation
On Monday Night last, seventy students and their parents assembled in the school
library for what has become the school’s annual medal presentation event.

Costigan, Burgess and Tipperary hurling star, Shane Maher and past pupil,
Noel Mc Grath. Medals were presented to the victorious Fitzgerald and
First Year Corn Ui Chathain, teams, the Cusack Cup football champions and the
First and Second Year Camogie League champions.
Acting Principal, Mr Willie Butler congratulated all the medal winners and
complimented them on their commitment to sport in the school. He spoke of the
importance of sport as a means of building character and preparing young people
for the greater challenges of life. He wished all teams well for the
coming year and reminded students that those who are involved in sport need
to be well organised and to work much harder than others to meet the competing
demands on their time.
. He thanked Noel Mc Grath for his great contribution to hurling in the
school and wished him well in his studies at Limerick Institute of Technology
and in his future hurling career.
Thanks to Ms. Caroline Kinane and to Alice Brereton and Sharon Quinn who prepared
the refreshments on the evening.
“Grease”
Auditioning has concluded for the School’s production of “Grease”which
will take place on November 13th and 14th. There was great excitement last
week as scores of students queued, in scenes that would do justice
to “The X Factor”or “You’re a Star”, to audition
for parts in the musical. Congratulation to all those who had the confidence
to stand up and perform for the Production team. Well done to those who were
successful. For the others, there are still minor parts or places in
the chorus.
Coffee Morning for the Hospice Movement
On Monday morning last the school hosted a staff coffee morning in aid of the
hospice movement. Staff enjoyed coffee and scones provided by volunteers from
Transition Year. Thanks to Ms. Tina Fogarty who organised the event and to
Ms Kinane for supervising the preparations.

on Wednesday last. Students and teachers expressed their delight to
see the hard work of the past three years rewarded in another excellent set
of results. Acting Principal, Mr Butler congratulated all students
and urged them to continue to work hard in Transition Year or Fifth

School Musical
Auditions are underway for Our Lady’s Production of “Grease”,
the musical by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey. The show will be staged in
the school gym on November 13th and 14th and tells the story of how rock and
roll changed American youth culture during the pivotal moment when America
took its first tentative steps out of the conformity and social/sexual oppression
of the 1950s and towards individual freedom in the 1960s. The Musical takes
its name from the 1950s United States’working-class youth sub-culture
known as greasers. It is set in 1959 in fictional Rydell High in Chicago and
follows ten working class kids as they navigate the complexities of growing
up this changing world.

Our Lady’s News
Geography Field Trip to Ballyvaughan
On the 5th of September, the 6th Year Geography students of Our Lady’s went to Ballyvaughan Bay in Co. Clare to research material for their Geographical Investigation Report. They left Templemore at 7am. It was a long journey but on their arrival they met with friendly instructors who divided them into groups before heading out to study the coastal features of deposition. Even though the instructors were very helpful, the horrible wild weather conditions made things very difficult. Although every one was soaked it was great fun and for the most part students enjoyed it immensely. The students studied sand dune formation and the formation of sand spits and baymouth bars. Everyone enjoyed the experience as part of the Leaving Cert Course.
Harty Cup
Training for the Harty cup began on Monday evening. Managers, Mr. Noel Fogarty
and Mr. Sean Johnston are happy to have such a strong and committed panel

First Year Induction
Students and staff at Our Lady’s are busy at work in the classroom this
week after a very successful induction programme last week. We welcome
all new students to the school including First Years and the large number of
students who have joined other classes in the school.
First Years began the school year on Wednesday when they were welcomed by staff and members of the Cairdeas team. After their meeting with Acting Principal, Mr. Butler and Deputy Principal, Mr. Paul Fogarty, they were introduced to their Yearhead, Ms. Margie Costigan and their class tutors who assigned them to classes and gave them an overview of the school. The induction programme concluded with a tour of the school organized by Ms Ann Deroe with the help of the Cairdeas group. The purpose of this was to help familiarize the new students with the layout of the school and make their transition from Primary School less daunting. All First Years will be assigned a Cara or friend in the coming days who will look out for them over the first weeks and months of secondary school. In addition Ms Deroe will meet each first year individually to ensure that all students are settling in well to the school. Thanks to the large group of students who helped out with the first year induction programme last week.
All Students Return
On Thursday Second and Fifth year students returned and on Friday all students
were busy at work. The arrival of Repeats on Monday completed the run
in to the new school year. This group, in particular, can be encouraged by
the great success of students who repeated at Our Lady’s last year
and achieved improvements of over 100 points in a number of cases.
We wish every success to all our outgoing 6th year students who begin their
third level courses or join the world of work in the coming weeks. We are confident
that your time at Our Lady’s will have prepared you well for whatever
path you have chosen.
Guidance Counselling
We welcome Ms Therese Boland back to the school after her year’s leave
of absence spent completing a diploma in Guidance Counselling at NUI, Maynooth.
Ms Boland will be providing comprehensive careers’advice to all students
as well as organising attendance at a number of career events within and outside
the school. In her role as counsellor she will meet students on a regular basis
to help them with personal and school related problems they may be encountering.
We thank Mr. Liam O’Brien who worked very hard in the school last year
as guidance counsellor. Liam has taken up a new position in Thurles this year.
Looking Forward to the Year’s activities
As the new school year begins, we wish all our students well in their studies
and in the various extra-curricular activities that will take place during
the year. Already, plans for the school musical which will be staged in November,
are well under way.
We expect our girls’basketball teams to build on their great success
last year and we
look forward to many exciting moments on the hurling and football pitches,
particularly in the Rice, Harty, Dean Ryan and Fitzgerald competitions.
We face tough opposition in the Harty Cup from De La Salle, Carrigaline, and
Doon C.B.S. who are in the same group as Our Lady’s. The first game against
Doon C.B.S. will take place on October 8th.
As always, our athletes will compete in the various competitions which take
place in the course of the year.

The Harty Cup played a very useful challenge game against Mount St Joseph this

Fitzgerald Final - Report By Shane Nolan
Noel McGrath Stars as Our Lady's Dethrone the Champions.
Our Lady's Templemore 1 - 21
Thurles C.B.S. 4 - 08
Our Lady's Secondary School Templemore have dethroned current Fitzgerald
Cup Holders, Thurles C.B.S. in an epic goal filled final at Simple Stadium
on Friday last.
Thurles the holders of this competition for the previous five years were well
equipped to make it six in a row, and to loose a Final whilst still scoring
4 goals is a rarity. However, Our Lady's had County Minor, Noel McGrath who
gave a man of the match performance scoring a total of 11 points from a score
line of 1 - 21. He was a class act throughout and proved to be the difference
between the sides.
The game itself was a very open and entertaining one with Thurles the quickest
to settle who got a dream start. When after 8 minutes of play were 2 -2 to
3 points ahead. Thurles's two goals coming from their Captain, Colm Ryan.
The first following a mistake by the Templemore keeper, and the second he
was left alone inside Our Lady's half and made no mistake with a cool 25
yards finish. Our Lady's managed to keep in touch, thanks to the accurate
free taking of Noel McGrath and an excellent point from play on the left
hand touch line. McGrath then turned provider as his side line cut was directed
towards the Thurles goal mouth where Tom Ryan was at hand to get the delicate
of touches and finish to the Thurles net. David Butler and William Donnelly
exchanged points before Thurles and Colm Ryan got their third goal of the
game. Following excellent work by John O'Neill to carry the ball in to the
Our Lady's half and pass to Ryan who gave the keeper no chance with his well
placed finish. Thurles were really flying at this stage and got another point,
thanks to the accurate free taking of Denis Maher. After 22 minutes Our Lady's
sought the need for change and brought on Aidan McGrath for Patrick Moynihan.
This astute substitution was to pay dividend as by the end of the half McGrath
would have come up with a total of 3 points from play. Matthew Greene and
Aidan McCormack got a point each for Thurles and Noel McGrath did likewise
with a point from a free. This left the half time score at 3 - 6 to 1 -8
in favour of Thurles.
The second half was barely a minute old when Our Lady's really took the game
by the scruff of the neck when Noel McGrath scored two quick points and were
followed by a fine point by Adrian Ryan. Kevin O'Riordan got his name on the
score sheet with a point from play. Our Lady's scoring 4 points without reply.
Then Thurles got their fourth goal of the game when Aidan McCormack was unmarked
on the edge of the square and succeeded in directing the ball to Our Lady's
net. This surely was a hammer blow to Our Lady's; however, they never dropped
their heads and always managed to keep in touch thanks to a second point from
Eoin Fitzpatrick from play. A brilliant point by substitute, Pat Lupton and
two from play by Noel McGrath. Thurles got two more scores from frees and this
left them with a final score line of 4 - 8. Our Lady's finished the strongest
with a final score of 1 - 21. With points in the closing stages from McGrath
and the second by Adrian Ryan and two by Aidan Fogarty. Best on the day for
Our Lady's were sold full back, Liam Butler, William Donnelly who gave a fine
performance throughout, Adrian Ryan, Aidan McGrath and the Star of the Game,
Noel McGrath.
Thurles who were by no means disgraced and had they taken their chances and
had they had their full team available, the result may have been different.
Best on the day for C.B.S. were Colm Ryan, who played a Captain's part and
leading by example scoring 3 goals and a point, Denis Maher and Bill McCormack
were solid throughout. Aidan McCormack who scored 1 - 1 from play.
Teams and Scorers.
Our Lady's, Templemore.

Fitzgerald Cup
Our Lady's had a hard earned 1-20 to 3-11 victory over a very skilful and determined
Ballingarry team in the first round of the Fitzgerald Cup Under 17 Tipperary "A" hurling
competition at Littleton on Wednesday evening last. After a promising start
that gave Our Lady's a six point lead in the first quarter of an hour Ballingarry
settled into the game and scored two goals in quick succession to give them
a half time lead of 2-8 to 0-10. The contest remained close throughout the
second half and only three points separated the sides at the final whistle.
This was not the performance that was expected from Our Lady's but the absence
of Willie Ryan, Aidan Fogarty and Kevin O'Riordan through injury had a significant
bearing on the game. Even with the return of these players, the whole team
will have to show significant improvement before the semi-final which will
take place in the next couple of weeks. On the day there were a number of
encouraging performances. Noel Mc Grath, as ever, was a huge presence with
his fielding, striking and free-taking. Andrew Ryan at corner back was solid
throughout and Sean Mc Cormack, after his move to centre-back broke Ballingarry's
dominance. Team: Paul Murray Capt. (Templederry), Andrew Ryan (Toomevara),
Sean Mc Cormack (Borris-Ileigh), Paddy Moynihan (Loughmore-Castleiney), Eoin
Fitzpatrick (J.K. Brackens), Liam Butler ( Moyne-Templetuohy), Cian Hennessy
( Loughmore-Castleiney), Noel Mc Grath (Loughmore-Castleiney) Shane Delaney
(Drom-Inch), Eanna Murray (Templederry), William Donnelly (Borris-Ileigh),
Aidan Mc Grath ( Loughmore-Castleiney) Tom Ryan (Templederry) David Farrelly
(J.K. Brackens), Aidrian Ryan (Templederry) Sub: Pa. Ryan (Clonakenny)
"Philadelphia Here I Come"
On Wednesday transition year students under the guidance of drama teacher Ms.
Aileen Cashman performed scenes from "Philadelphia Here I Come" by
Brian Friel for third year and fifth year students. The production was of a
very high standard with memorable performances from all the cast but especially
from William Cole-Baker as Gar Private and Eamonn Jones as Gar Public. It's
a real pity that because of the busy schedule of the T.Y. students the production
can't be staged for a wider audience.
AIB Build a Bank Challenge
On Thursday the Transition year students travelled to Kilkenny with Business
teacher, Ms. Mary Lou Carroll and Mr Denis Cahill of AIB, Templemore to the
AIB "Build a Bank Challenge". In spite of making a very professional
presentation outlining the activities of the school bank throughout the year
they were unfortunate not to be in the prizes.
March 17th
First and Second Year Camogie
Our Lady's played Cashel C.C. in Tuesday last in Templemore Town Park in very
wet conditions. Cashel were the stronger team and got off to a great start,
scoring 2. 2 early on in the game. Róisin Kilmartin scored a goal
for Templemore before half-time. In the second half Temlemore had a lot of
play but found it hard to score due to the strength of the Cashel back-line.
The final score was 2-3 to 1-4 in favour of Cashel. Best for Our Lady's were
Laura Bourke, Orla Hennessy, Marese O' Connell, Alice Brereton, Paula Hassett
and Sorcha Hennessy. Team: Emmah Maher, Martha O' Brien, Doireann Fogarty,
Jane Thormey, Eibhlis Maher, Alice Brereton, Sorcha Hennessy, Laura Bourke,
Orla Hennessy (Capt.) Mary Hassett, Marese O' Connell, Paula Hassett, Edwina
Clohessy, Patricia Mc Grath, Roisin Kilmartin. Subs: Natasha Twamley, Marie
Sheedy, Sharon Quinn, Karen Costigan.
Our Lady's have now qualified for the "B" final of the league which
will be played before Easter.
Second Year Girls' Basketball
The Second Years played St. Leo's Carlow on Thursday last in the regional quarter-final
in the Sarsfield Social Centre, Thurles. It was a close encounter with only
three points between the sides at half-time. However, early in the third quarter
Our Lady's scored a few vital baskets to push their lead to eight points -
a lead they defended to the final whistle. Top scorer for Our Lady's was Aoife
Ryan with 17 points to her credit. Our Lady's now play the semi-final on Thursday,
March 15th against either Loreto, Mullingar, or Convey College, Kildare.
First Year Girls' Basketball
On Monday March 12th Our Lady's travelled to Sarsfield's Social centre, Thurles
to play their quarter-final against Ballyfin College. Our Lady's got off to
a great start and were leading by 12 points to 4 at the end of the first quarter.
After a tough second quarter Our Lady's maintained their eight point lead.
However, in a marvellous third quarter put Our Lady's in the driving seat with
a 26 point lead going into the final quarter. Our Lady's ran out easy winners
in the end on a scoreline of 37 points to 14.
This was a great team performance with some excellent scorers and great defence.
The semi-final is fixed for March 20th against either Kilcullen or Tullamore.
Transition Year Drama

All Ireland Boys' Intermediate
Cross Country.
Congratulations to the Intermediate Boy's team which came in fifth place in
the All Ireland Finals at Santry on Saturday last. The team of Liam Harty,
James Maher, Kevin O' Riordan, Cian Hennessy and Thomas Quinn expected to be
in the medals in this event but due to a bout of flu, the team's star runner
Liam Harty was unable to finish the race and this was a serious blow the team's
prospects. As things worked out their fifth place was a solid achievement.
Congratulation to all the team and to coach, Mr. Martin Leyden.
Croke Cup
Commiserations to the Munster U15 A White cup hurlers who were defeated by
a margin of four points by a stronger St Caimin's team at Dolla on Wednesday
last. The conditions were far from ideal and both teams struggled to get scores
early in the game. The final score was 2-6 to 1-5 if favour of St. Caimin's.
Basketball
The first and second year girls played their final league games against Killaloe
on Wednesday last at the Sarsfield's Social Centre in Thurles.
The first years were first out and led by 15 points to five at half time and
went on to win by a margin of 43 points to fifteen.
The second year game was a much tighter affair with only a point between the
sides at half-time. In the third quarter Our Lady's opened up an eight point
lead but Killaloe clawed their way back and went on to win by 39 point to 35.
Both teams have qualified for the Regional Quarter Finals and having topped
their respective groups have home advantage. The first years will play Ballyfin
College on Friday March 9th and the second years will play St. Leo's College
Carlow on Thursday March 8th. Because of ongoing development work in our gym
both games will be played Sarsfields Social centre.
In preparation for their semi-final the first years played a challenge against
Presentation Thurles B team. This was an excellent challenge where all panel
members got a chance to play . Our Lady's were much too strong for the opposition
and won on a scoreline of 53 points to 13.
Cusack Cup Football and Fitzgerald Cup Hurling
Training is underway for these two competitions at present. The Fitzgerald
Cup team was scheduled to play on Friday but it was cancelled due to weather
conditions. Following victory in the Dean Ryan and the good run in the Harty
Cup, this team is expected to give a good account of itself when the competition
gets underway. Best wishes to Willie Ryan of Clonakenny who is out of action
for a couple of weeks because of a broken finger he suffered while training
with his club at the weekend.
The Cusack panel under the guidance of Mr. Sean Johnston will be making a brave
attempt to repeat last year's performance and retain the cup.
For March 3rd 2007
First and Second Year Camogie
Our Lady's played Roscrea Community College in the 1st and 2nd Year Camogie
Competition Wednesday Feb. 21st in Templemore. This was a very close game
with neither side dominating. Our Lady's persevered and went on to win by
1-1 to 0-1. There were good displays from Emma Maher, Doireann Fogarty, Alice
Brereton, Laura Bourke, Orla Hennessy, Jane Thormey, Roisin Gilmartin and
Marese O' Connell.
Team and Panel: Emma Maher, Martha O' Brien, Doireann Fogarty, Karen Costigan,
EIbhlis Maher, Alice Brereton, Mary Hassett, Laura Bourke (Capt.), Orla Hennessy,
Jane Thormey, Marese O' Connell, Mairead Delaney, Edwina Clohessy, Patricia
Mc Grath, Roisin Gilmartin. Subs: Natasha Twamley, Aine Bailey, Paula Hassett,
Jennifer Russell, Sharon Quinn, Rebecca Carroll.
Our Lady's now play Cashel Community College in the next round.
Templemore Credit Union Awards
Congratulations to the members of Our Lady's first ever victorious Dean Ryan
team who were honoured at a ceremony in the Templemore Arms Hotel on Thursday
last. Capt, Noel Mc Grath ( Loughmore-Castleiney) and Vice Captain, Patrick
Ryan ( Clonakenny) attended the ceremony and accepted the award on behalf
of a group of players who have added the Dean Ryan Cup to the trophies they
have already won since the entered the school, including First Year hurling
trophy, Rice Cup, Croke Cup, and White Cup. Thanks to Templemore Credit Union
for this honour and congratulations to all those involved in the success.
First Year History Field Trip
On Friday Feb. 16th, class 1 Naomh Treasa took part in a very enjoyable field
trip which took them from the historic monastic site at Monaincha and the
Roscrea Round Tower,to the Rock of Cashel. The highlight of the day was a
very informative and entertaining forty minute guided tour of, arguably,
Ireland's most famous historic site.
French Exchange Students.
By Miriam Keane
Months of careful planning culminated with the arrival on Wednesday 14thFebruary
of eleven French students and their leaders from Premilhat in Central France
under the auspices of the Templemore Town Twinning Committee. The students,
with their three adult leaders, Monsieur and Madame Lamoine and Monsieur
Pierre Barre were welcomed at an official reception hosted jointly by the
Town Twinning Committee and Our Lady's Secondary School.
The students attended classes at the school on Thursday and
Friday with some showing a flair for not only the English, but also the Irish
language! On Thursday evening the visitors enjoyed a traditional meal of
Irish Stew at the school and participated in an art workshop facilitated
by Mrs Hassett. On Friday morning Ms. Kinane's Irish Breakfast proved very
popular.
They were also treated to a guided tour of the Garda College after which they
took a leisurely stroll in the Town Park.
The visitors explored the city of Kilkenny on Saturday, accompanied
by their Irish counterparts. Sunday was spent en famille . The students from
Our Lady's who hosted the French visitors were:
Bernadette Bourke, Elaine Bourke, Jack Carter, Fiona Cussen, Kevin Delaney,
Miriam Keane, Deirdre Kiely, Marian Lee, Siobhan Ludden, Aisling Newe and Mairead
Ryan. The teachers involved were Ms Sinead Harding and Ms Mary Meagher.
They all gathered on the town square early on Monday morning
to say their farewells as the visitors departed for Shannon Airport. But
it was au revoir as we expect to see many of them again on future twinning
visits.

Athletics- Minor Boys Qualify for All Ireland
Congratulations to the Intermediate Boys' team which finished in the silver
medal position at the Munster Schools' Cross Country Event at Dungarvan on
Saturday last. As a result they now go on to represent the school in the
All Ireland finals at Dublin City University on March 3rd. Liam Harty finished
in second place and led Thomas Quinn, James Maher, Cian Hennessy, Eoin Kinnane
and Liam Butler to silver medals.
Congratulations to the Minor Boys' team who also finished in second place at
Dungarvan. Jamie Moloney won an individual Bronze and led Shane Cashman, Eoin
Bourke, Dale Donnelly, Kevin O' Connell and Eanna Ryan to second place.
The minor girls team made up of Rebecca Carroll, Maresse O' Connell , Chiara
Sulas, and Aisling O' Shea finished in fourth place.
Parenting- The Challenges and the Rewards
On Monday night last, John Lonregan, Governor of Mountjoy prison was the guest
speaker at Our Lady's where he gave a thought provoking and challenging talk
entitled "Parenting- The challenges and the rewards". Over the
course of his one and a half hour address, he entertained and enlightened
his attentive audience and shared his insights into parent-child relationships.
He emphasised the importance of spending time with children, talking to them
and listening to them. The most valuable things we can give children, he
said, are self confidence and the ability to be happy. He urged parents to
nurture the talents their children have and not to put too much emphasis
on academic success. He stressed the importance of a positive attitude towards
children and said all people, adults included react better to kindness and
encouragement than to criticism.
First and Second Year Basketabll
On Wednesday, February 7th, the first and second year girls' basketball teams
travelled to Birr to play St. Brendan's Community School.
The first years were first on court and played some great defensive basketball
to keep Birr scoreless at half-time. The half-time score was five points to
nil in favour of Our Lady's. Going into the last quarter Our Lady's still had
a slender lead of five points and played some great basketball to emerge victiorious
against a much taller and physically stronger Birr team. Michelle Collins was
Our Lady's leading scorer with ten of the thirteen points. The final score
is was 13 points to 8 in favour of Our Lady's.
The second years got off to a very poor start and were six nil down at half-time.
Some poor shooting and bad defence saw Birr leading by 8 points to nil going
into the last quarter. The game looked beyond redemption for our Lady's but
they staged an incredible comeback to bring the sides level with two minutes
remaining on the clock. Two great baskets by Edwina Clohessy who scored ten
points saw Our Lady's take an amazing victory on a scoreline of 12 points to
8. This was a marvellous turn around and great credit is due to all five players
in the final quarter.
Taoiseach Announces € 80,000 grant for School Gym
On Friday week last Taoiseach, Mr. Bertie Ahern visited the
school as part of his tour of North Tipperary. Principal, Ms Higgins welcomed
him to Our Lady's and introduced him to the large group of students, teachers
and Board of Management members who had assembled in the gym. In the course
of his short address the Taoiseach announced a grant of € 80,000.00
for the completion of the gym restoration project. Mr Ahern then mingled
with students and shook hands before having light refreshments in the library
where he met representatives of community groups and other organizations.
Harty Cup
Commiserations to the Harty Cup team who were narrowly defeated by Thurles
C. B. S. in the quarter-final replay at Templetuohy on Wednesday week last.
This was another highly entertaining game where all that is best in hurling
was on display. The final score of 2 -11 0- 13 in favour of the C.B.S. hardly
does justice to a contest where, for long periods, the sides were separated
by the narrowest of margins. In the final analysis what was between the teams
was little more than the break of a ball and the result could have gone either
way. While mentors Mr. Noel Fogarty and Mr. Sean Johnson will be disappointed
to be out of the competition for this year, they can feel satisfied that the
many hours of hard work they put in with this very young panel of players took
them farther than anyone could have predicted and they can look forward to
even more success in the coming year.
Thanks to the field committee of Moyne- Templetuohy and to caretaker Paddy
Kelly whose professional approach to the hosting of both Harty Cup games added
to the sense of occasion for all concerned.
Open Night
The school held its open night on Tuesday January 30th. Parents and prospective
first years were given a tour of the school by students. Afterwards the 6th
class pupils took part in a very enjoyable table quiz while their parents
attended an information session in the library. Afterwards parents enjoyed
refreshments provided by Ms. Caroline Kinnane helped by enthusiastic Home
Economics students in the school. Thanks to all who attended and to students
and staff who worked to make the night a success.
First and Second Year Camogie
Our Lady's played Presentation, Thurles in a challenge match on Friday February
2nd. This was a very useful exercise for Our Lady's who opted to give every
panel member at least half a game.. The final score was 3-4 to 3-1 in favour
of Thurles. Panel: Laura Bourke, Emma Maher, Sorcha Hennessy, Doireann Fogarty,
Roisin Gilmartin, Alice Brereton, Jane Tormey, Edwina Clohessy, Martha O' Brien,
Natasha Twamley, Aine Bailey, Sharon Quinn, Marese O' Connell, Patricia Mc
Grath, Mairead Delaney, Mary Hassett, Paula Hassett, Maggie Ryan, Karen Costigan,
Claire O' Meara, Eibhlis Maher.
February 3rd 2007
Harty Cup Quarter-Final Draw
Congratulations to the Harty team and to managers Mr. Noel
Fogarty and Mr. Sean Johnston on a spirited performance against old rivals,
Thurles C.B.S. in the Harty Quarter final at Templetuohy on Wednesday last.
Our Lady's began the second half four points down and conceded another goal
on the throw in but, thanks to the heroics of Noel Mc Grath, came back to
earn a draw and a replay at the same venue on Wednesday January 31st ( see
match report). Again many thanks to the field committee and officers of the
Moyne-Templetuohy club who left no stone unturned in their preparation of
the venue and stewarding the event on the day.
Music Concert.
Following the success of the Music Concert before Christmas, musicians and
singers from the school took the stage again this week and performed two more
concerts. On Wednesday the audience was made up the students and staff from
local primary schools and on Thursday night the concert was attended by parents
and the general public. Again both events were hugely successful with all the
performers receiving a warm reception from the large audiences who attended.
On this occasion we also had the very We wish them every success in the Munster
Final this weekend. Congratulations to Music teachers, Ms Ann Marie Johnston
and Ms Roisin Hackett who arranged the concerts and to Ms Aileen Cashman and
others who helped coordinate the event. We wish to express our thanks to the
teachers and staff of the local primary schools and to the large numbers of
parents and family members who supported the concerts.
First and Second Year Basketball
Both the first and second year girls' basketball teams travelled to play to
Borrisoleigh to play the first round of the league last week.
The first years were first on court. They got into their stride immediately
and were 14 points to no score after the first quarter. Borrisoleigh fought
back in the second quarter with some fine scores and at half-time it was 18
- 7 in favour of Our Lady's. The Match was put beyond Borrisoleigh's reach
in the 3rd quarter with some great scores from Aoife Ryan and Marie Sheedy
and excellent defensive work from Marese O' Connell. The final score was Our
Lady's 34 , Borrisoleigh 15.
The second year game was a much tighter affair and a low scoring game. The
match only came to life in the 3rd quarter when our Lady's found their scoring
touch with some fine baskets. They emerged victorious on a scoreline of 16
points to 7.
The next game will be against St. Brendan's Community School, Birr.
January 28th 2007
Croke Cup Victory - Our Lady's retain Tipperary Under Fifteen
a Half "A" Hurling Title.
Congratulations to the Croke Cup team who had a well earned victory over a
determined Thurles C.B.S. Team at Templetuohy on Wednesday last. On a day when
everyone concerned would have been better off inside sitting at a warm fire,
the two teams braved the sleety rain to serve up a feast of hurling for the
small band of dedicated supporters who attended the game. Thurles C.B.S. were
first off the mark and had a goal and a point on the scoreboard before Our
Lady's settled in. Two points from Eoin Bourke and a goal from M.J. Carroll
calmed the Templemore nerves and they led at half time by four points.
Playing against the wind and downfield in the second half Thurles C.B.S struggled
for the first ten minutes. A lucky goal for Our Lady followed by a well taken
point from Liam Treacy placed the Thurles boys eight points adrift. However,
the contest was far from over. Two C.B.S. goals in quick succession left a
point between the sides and it was all to play for in the last quarter. The
decision to move Dan Mc Cormack (Borris- Ileigh) to centre back and Liam Treacy
(Loughmore- Casteliney) to centre forward played a big part in earning victory
for Our Lady's . Mc Cormack defended with vision and courage and Treacy took
on the Thurles forwards time and again, scoring four points over the course
of the game. In the end,Our Lady's were worthy of their 3-13 to 2-8 victory
but the Thurles lads lost no honour in a contest where all the best that is
in hurling was on display from both sides.
Apart from Treacy and Mc Mc Cormack Our Lady's had many heroes. In goals, Martin
Kelly ( Moyne- Templetuohy) made a number of crucial saves at times when the
game was in the balance. In the backs Toomevara's Andrew Ryan was excellent
throughout the game and was well supported by Borrisoleigh's Damen Dunne and
Bracken's Patrick Brett. In the half back line Tomás Mc Grath (Loughmore-
Castleiney) and Bobby Bergin (Clonakenny) supported Liam Treacy well. At centre-field
Dan Mc Cormack was partnered by Liam Mullally ( Clonakenny) whose strength
and stamina were invaluable. The half forward line of Patrick Purcell (Errill-Rathdowney)
Patrick Lupton (Drom-Inch) and M.J Carroll (Clonakenny) worked hard for the
hour. Michael John contributed a valuable goal in the firs half and did important
work as an extra defender in the closing quarter of the game. Loughmore- Castleiney's
Liam Mc Grath (Loughmore- Castleiney) at corner forward showed real class,
contributing 1-3 to the Our Lady's tally while at full forward Eoin Bourke
( J.K. Brackens) was always dangerous, also scoring 1-3 in the course of the
game. At corner forward Damien Bergin (Moyne-Templetuohy) worked hard by was
unlucky not to get on the scoreboard.
Well done to the team and to mentors Mr. Seamus Bourke and Mr. Rory Purcell.
Thanks to Tom Hassett and the Moyne-Templetuohy club for hosting the game
in such terrible conditions and having everything in top shape. The cup of
tea provided by caretaker, Paddy Kelly at half time was a welcome treat for
all who availed of his hospitality.
November 18th.
Three Students Awarded Scholarships to University College
Maynooth.
Three students who sat the Leaving Certificate at our Lady's in June have been
awarded scholarships to study at Maynooth. David Maher (Psychology), Sean O'
Riordan and Theresa Mc Carthy ( Media Studies) were among an elite group of
students who attained over 500 points in the Leaving Certificate and were presented
with their scholarships at a special conferring ceremony at Maynooth recently.
An additional feature of this award is that these students have campus apartments
reserved for them at the college. We congratulate the three students and their
families on this very import achievement.
Harty Cup
The Harty Cup team suffered a narrow two point defeat at the hands of champions,
Midleton C.B.S. at New Inn last Wednesday. After conceding an early goal
Our Lady's played very well but Midleton proved just that little bit stronger.
The final score was 1- 10 to 0-11.
We now play Waterford Colleges next week and will have to win decisively here
to have a chance of reaching the quarter finals of the competition. In preparation
the panel played a very useful challenge game on Monday against Community College
Cashel.
Basketball
On Wednesday, November 1st the Cadet and Senior teams played
Borrisoleigh. The Cadet game was another close affair with Our Lady's coming
out on top by the narrowest of margins. The final score was 22 points t 21.
This victory secures top spot in the pool and we now await the outcome of
other games to see who we will face in the quarter final.
Unfortunately, the seniors, after a hard battle, had to concede defeat to a
physically stronger Borrisoleigh team. The final score was 28 to 21 in favour
of Borrisoliegh.
On Friday November 10th the seniors travelled to Roscrea to play their final
league match. A victory was needed to secure runner-up spot in the group. Thankfully
they came out on top on a score line of 21 to 15. Like the Cadets they now
await the outcome of other games before the quarter final pairings are decided.
Green Flag
A group of students under the guidance of Ms. Mary Walsh have begun the process
of making our Lady's a Green School. The group includes Lorraine Morrissey,
Sharon Morrissey, Kim Cummins, Nora Meade and Sharon Quinn. Last week they
travelled with Ms. Walsh to an induction day in Nenagh and already the school
has begun to provide containers for the recycling of various materials. The
Green committee is also running a competition among the students at present
to decide on a motto for the school's green project. They are optimistic
that with the help and cooperation of everyone in the school, the Green Flag
will be secured before summer 2007. We wish them the best of luck and encourage
everyone in the school to support their efforts.
Music Outing
Music students from all classes in Our Lady's travelled to Cork on Friday last
with teachers Ms. Johnston and Ms. Hackett to attend a musical performance
by Cork Pops' Orchestra. The programme included a demonstration of various
orchestral instruments, and performance of extracts from well-known classical
and modern orchestral works. For all concerned it was a most worthwhile experience.
November 14th 2006.
Operation Christmas Child
Hundreds of brightly wrapped shoe-boxes filled with toys, gifts, and many other
goodies left Our Lady's last week - bound for poor and deprived children
in other parts of the world. Well done to all on a fantastic effort made
this year and thanks to students and parents for their contributions.
Thanks also Ms. Joan Singleton who visited the school last week and spoke to
students about the "Operation Christmas Child" project. It is certainly
great to think that hundreds of children who would otherwise not have received
any gifts, will be enjoying a shoe box full of goodies this Christmas.
Theatre Visit
Fifty fifth year students enjoyed a visit to the Belltable Arts centre, Limerick
on Tuesday October 24th. The Gallowglass Theatre Company presented a striking
production of the play "Way to Heaven" by David Johnston. Based
on a real life incident in a concentration camp during World War Two, the
play was a powerful exploration of the themes of oppression, personal responsibility,
and ethnic mistrust. Students and teachers alike found the experience very
worthwhile.
Corn Ui Chathain First Year Hurling Final
Our Lady's Go Down Fighting in Extra Time.
The First Year, Corn Uí Chathain team were unlucky to lose out to Nenagh
CBS in extra time in the final of the competition at The Ragg on Wednesday
last. The first half was close with both sides showing skill and full-blooded
commitment in abundance. A Nenagh goal before half-time gave them the edge
going into the second half. At the end of the hour the teams were on equal
terms but in extra time, Nenagh's superior physical presence began to show
and they had built up a seven point lead by the end of extra time. Though it
is always disappointing to lose a final, Our Lady's can be proud of their performance
on the day. Also Our Lady's have had more than their share of success in the
Corn Uí Chathain and it is good for the competition to see it going
around. Well done to Nenagh C.B.S. on their victory.
Concern Debates
The Concern debating team, consisting of Liam Butler,Jim O' Grady, David Bourke,
and Martin Lee, were narrowly defeated by Thurles C.B.S. in the first league
round of the competition at Thurles when Our Lady's opposed the motion "Global
Commitments to the Environment are a load of hot air". We now face Cistercian
College in the second round at Our Lady's on November 16th. On this occasion
Our Lady's will propose the motion the "The United Nations belongs on
the scrap heap of history".
Senior Football First Round Victory
The Mc Gabhann , Tipperary U 18 ½ A football team had a decisive victory
over Cashel Community School at Dr. Morris Park on Wednesday last. Team: Thomas
Quinn, Cian Hennessy, Liam Butler, Paddy Moynihan, Stefan Leahy, Declan Lynagh,
Donie Greed, Noel Mc Grath, Cathal Scully, Willie Ryan, Shane Bourke, Aidan
Fogarty, David Bourke, Sean Mc Cormack, Aidan Mc Grath. Subs used: Eoin Fitzpatrick,
Nicky Ryan.
Croke Cup First Round Victory
The Under 15 hurlers had a convincing victory over Cashel Community School
in the first round of the competition on Friday week last.
Harty-Dean Ryan Challenge
On Tuesday last the Harty and Dean Ryan mentors availed of the free day and
good weather to organise a challenge between the two panels. With stiff competition
for places on both teams the challenge game was played with all the intensity

both teams. Thanks to J.K. Brackens for the use of the town park and to caretaker,

Harty Cup Victory over Limerick Colleges
The Harty Cup Team recorded a convincing 3-12 to 2-3 victory
over Limerick Colleges at Nenagh on Wednesday last in the first round of
the competition. After conceding two early goals Our Lady's settled down
well and went in at half time with a lead of two points. In the second half
Our Lady's dominated, limiting the opposition to one point. A goal for Our
Lady's mid way through the second half ended the game as a contest. While
this was a satisfying result Mr. Fogarty and Mr. Johnston are aware that
stiffer challenges lie ahead for this very young team. Our next outing is
against Midleton on November 8th.

Br. John Dooley who presented the Athlete of the Year awards praised the successes

fostered by sport and the necessity for players and athletes to work very hard

to all the winners and urged the players to continue to work hard at their
chosen sport and to avoid the kind of lifestyle that hinders sporting excellence.

Careers' Exhibition
On Friday last the school held its annual Careers' Exhibition in the gym. As
usual, this was a highly successful event with up to forty Universities,
Third Level Colleges, and Careers' agencies exhibiting again this year. With
the continuing diversification of career opportunities and third level courses,
this exhibition, co-ordinated by Mr. Seamus Bourke, is an invaluable help
to students from third year upwards who are beginning to think about their
future careers.
Beginning of Year Mass
The annual mass for the opening of the school year took place on Friday last
in the parish hall. The theme of the mass was hope and students from various
classes had decorated the church beautifully with artwork for the occasion.
In the opening address, Ailish O' Connell of the Students' Council welcomed
all the congregation, especially the new students who were attending their
first mass as part of the school community. She paid tribute to retiring school
chaplain, Sr. Helen, who has contributed so much to the spiritual welfare of
students at Our Lady's over many years. Celebrant Father Tom Dunne, in his
homily spoke of the importance of the importance of hope in the lives of young
people. As usual, the contribution of the musicians, singers and readers who
were well prepared made the mass a most enjoyable occasion.
Annual Fun Walk
In spite of a less than promising weather forecast all week , the students
and staff of Our Lady's set off on the annual Sponsored Walk around Cluan
in bright sunshine on Friday afternoon last. As a result of the fundraising
done by the students in their own parishes in the weeks before the walk and
the generosity of the people of Templemore on the day, the event was a success.
The proceeds go towards the provision of equipment and the hire of buses
for the school's many sporting activities. We are grateful to all who supported
or helped with the event, especially the Gardai who facilitated the project.
Schools' Equestrian Event
Congratulations to Caitriona Kennedy from Drom who came second overall at the
Inter Schools One Day Equestrian Event at Marguerite Lodge near Naas last weekend.

to 2-5 victory over Thurles C.B.S. in the first round of the Corn Ui Chathain
competiton at Thurles on Tuesday.

County Minors' Triumphant Return.
On Thursday evening members of the victorious Tipperary Co Minor team from the school were greeted by the students and staff at a special assembly in the Gym. Johnny Ryan, (Drom- Inch) Gearoid Ryan (Templederry), Shane Bourke (J.K. Brackens) and Noel Mc Grath (Loughmore- Castleiney) who were accompanied by Mr. John Costigan Chairman of the Tipperary County Board were given a warm reception at the assembly. Principal, Ms Higgins congratulated the four members of the victorious team on their fine achievement and thanked them for their visit to the school. Mr Costigan praised the contribution all four panel members made to Tipperary's success. He thanked Ms Higgins and the games teachers at Our Lady's for their continued commitment to games in the school. Finally, Harty trainer, Mr. Noel Fogarty made a presentation on behalf of the school to each panel member.
Training Begins
Training for this year's competitions gets underway in earnest this week. On
Tuesday, a challenge game takes place at the Garda Pitch for prospective
members of the Dean Ryan Panel. Harty training commenced on Monday evening
under the care of Mr. Noel Fogarty, Mr. Sean Johnston, and Mr Jackie Walsh.
This group will play their first challenge on Wednesday.
Annual Fun Walk
The annual fun walk will take place this year on September 29th. Sponsor cards
have been issued to all students. Last year this event raised over €10,
000.00 euro which was used to finance all sport in the school. With a huge
effort from all concerned we can increase this figure in the current year.
Cairdeas
Cairdeas, the peer mentoring programme which gives senior students
responsibility for a first year student, has been in operation at Our Lady's
for the past couple of years under the guidance of Ms. Anne Deroe. Each senior
volunteer is allocated a "Cara" in First Year to help the new students
settle in and overcome any difficulties they may encounter. Any problems
are reported back to Ms Deroe who liaises with the principal, class tutors
and year heads.
This year a large number of senior students have volunteered to become members
of Cairdeas and were willing to return to school on August 30th before their
holidays were over to meet the First Years They used clues on a School Trail
to help the new students become familiar with the school. Great credit is due
to Cairdeas members who will give up their free time over the coming weeks
to be involved in various activities with First Year students.
Annual Opening School Mass
The annual opening school mass will take place on September 29th. Members of
the Religious Education team are hard at work with the students on preparation
for this very important event in the school calendar.

School Celebrates Academic and Sporting Success.
As the new academic year begins, the school community at our Lady's has much
to celebrate this week . Management, staff and students are delighted by
the recent academic and sporting success of students of the school. This
year's Leaving Certificate results in particular are a source of pride and
satisfaction to all concerned. "We congratulate all our Leaving Cert.
students," said Principal, Ms Higgins. "We are absolutely delighted
with the success of the class of 2006. While it is satisfying to see so many
of this year's students achieving places in high profile courses like Pharmacy,
Law, Veterinary and Primary Teaching we are equally proud of students who
are taking up apprenticeships or entering the world of work. The success
of this year's students, again, is a vindication of the school's broad curriculum
which fosters development of the whole person," Ms Higgins said. "Many
of this year's highest achievers participated fully in the school's extra-curricular
programme over the past five or six years, representing the school with distinction
in sport, debating and other activities. We wish them all success in their
future studies and careers."
G.A.A.
Congratulations to the four students from the school who were part of the Tipperary
Minor team that had a comprehensive victory over Galway in the All Ireland
on Sunday. John Ryan (Drom-Inch) had a superb game in goals. Gearoid Ryan
(Templederry) gave a top class performance at centre-field and Shane Bourke
(J.K Brackens) and Noel Mc Grath (Loughmore - Castleiney) were part of the
panel.
While the games' department celebrates the achievements of its four County
Minors, preparations are underway for another busy GAA year at the school.
Following victories in the White and Croke Cups in hurling and the Cusack Cup
in football last season, we will be anxious to build on that success in the
coming year. The Dean Ryan Cup has never been won by the school so this competition
will be of particular interest especially since, our keenest rivals, Thurles
C.B.S. have an impressive panel at this level. Our Harty team will be in transition
this year. With many of the big names from last year like Johnny Ryan, Gearoid
Ryan, Johnny Campion and Shane Purcell having moved on we will be looking to
the likes of Shane Bourke and Noel Mc Grath for leadership.
As usual there will be lots of optimism among the First Year and Rice Cup panels
with some very promising young talent arriving from the Primary Schools again
this year.
Atheltics
During the summer athletes from Our Lady's have been blazing a trail of glory
of their own. In the Irish Schools' Athletics Championships at Tullamore in
June, Eoin Hannon (Ballyskenach) won two gold medals, setting a personal best
of 7.09 metres in the long jump and achieving another personal best of 14.99
seconds in the 110 M Hurdles. Later in the summer he went on to break the Boys
U 18 Long Jump record in the Celtic International with another excellent jump
of 6.96 metres.
Liam Harty of Drom won Gold in the 3000 m at the national championships
with a great solo performance in a time of 32.16 seconds finishing over 100
metres clear of the second place finishers.
Alec Jones won gold silver and bronze medals in Hammer, Shot Putt, Javelin
and High Jump at the Munster championships

First and Second Year Girls' Basketball
Our First and Second Years made the long trip to Mullingar on Tuesday last
to play Loreto Mullingar in the Regional semi-final. This match was in the
balance right to the end but Loreto's ability to take scores in the final
quarter proved the difference and they went on to win on a score line of
25 points to 18. Great credit is due to Our Lady's girls who fought bravely
right to the final whistle and were missing a few players on the day who
could have made the difference.
The Second Years travelled on Thursday last to Clonaslee to take on Sacred Heart, Tullamore in their semi-final. This match went basket for basket with Tullamore holding a slender lead at half time of 13 points to 11. However, in the second half, Tullamore raised their game and played some excellent attacking basketball while defending aggressively. Two of their players in particular stood out and scored 29 points of their team's total. The final score of 33 points to 13 doesn't really reflect the great effort by Our Lady's and like the First Years, they can be proud of their achievement in reaching this stage of the competition. Great credit is due also the their coach Ms. Mary Fitzpatrick who put in many hours of preparation with both teams.
Rice Cup
Our Rice Cup Hurlers had their first success of the year with a hard fought
win over Ennis CBS in Nenagh on Tuesday. Playing with the wind in the first
half, Our Lady's stormed ahead into a 3 goal lead. However Ennis, to their
credit, fought hard and took some good scores to reduce to margin to 3 points
in the second half. With some good performances by our halfbacks and a well
taken Eoin Bourke goal, Our Lady's held out for a victory on a score line
of 4- 3 to 0 - 8. The team lined out as follows. Martin Kelly (Templetouhy),
Damien Dunne(Borrisoleigh), Liam Tracey ( Loughmore), Pat Brett (J.K. Brackens)
, Tomás McGrath ( Loughmore ), Andrew Ryan (Toomevara)(captain), Dan
McCormack(Borrisleigh), Michael J Carroll (Clonakenny), Bobby Bergin (Clonakenny),
Pat Purcell (Errill), Pat Lupton(Drom), Francais Kennedy ( JK Brackens),
Eoin Bourke (J. K. Brackens), Eddie Long (Drom), Jason Bergin (Templetouhy).
Well done to the team and to trainers, Paul Fogarty and Seamus Bourke.
TY Visit to Care Centre and Patterson's Nursing home.
On Tuesday last Transtion Year students accompanied by Ms. Harding, Ms. Johnston
and Sr. Helen made a return visit to The Day Care Centre, Templemore and
Patterson's Nursing Home in Roscrea. They had visited both these places on
December 13th and they and their hosts enjoyed the experience so much they
decided to pay a return visit during Lent. The Lenten visit was part of a
prayer service on the theme of "Hands" and "Lent". Each
resident was given a gift of a small wooden cross which was made in the woodwork
class. Like the Christmas visit, this was a great success and the Transition
Year students are grateful to Sr. Helen, Ms Harding and Ms Johnston who prepared
the prayer service with them.
Camogie Players chosen for Munster Secondary Schools Selection.
Congratulations to Siobhán Bourke who has been selected on the Munster
Secondary Schools' camogie team and to Caitriona Maher who has been chosen

to school teams for the past couple of years and to their trainer Ms. Teresa
Brennan.

White Cup Team Reaches Final
On Wednesday last the White Cup U15 A hurlers travelled to Dolla to take on
St Flannan's of Ennis for a place in the final of the competition.
After losing the toss Our Lady's played against a slight breeze in the first
half. The game, from the start, was a tough contest between two determined
teams. Flannan's strong physical presence made life difficult for our forwards
and many early chances were missed. Flannan's took the lead after eight minutes,
scoring the first point of the game. It was another three minutes before Aidan
Mc Grath registered Our Lady's first score. Stout defending by both sets of
backs kept the scoring low and Flannan's led by four points to two at half-time.
In the second half Our Lady's began to dominate but again we missed many scoring
chances and the game remained in the balance until centre-forward, Sean Mc
Cormack and centre-back Willie Ryan exchanged places. Ryan scored an inspirational
point at a time when it seemed we were incapable scoring and Mc Cormack cleaned
up at centre-back. At the end of an exhausting struggle Our Lady's had scored
eight points to Flannan's five.
This game was dominated by the backs. For Our Lady's, Liam Butler at full back,
saw off challenge after challenge throughout the game. The half-back line was
probably where the game was won. Willie Ryan was powerful at centre-back while
Pio Kennedy and Michael Carroll repeatedly frustrated the Flannan's attack
by their work rate and confidence on the ball. Apart from the backs, Kevin
Johnston gave a typically inspirational performance at centre-field and took
the game to the opposition. Eoin Fitzpatrick worked hard at wing-forward but
made his greatest contribution supporting the defence on a number of crucial
occasions. Substitute,Toby Morgan added to our attack when he came on at corner-forward
and though he failed to get on the scoreboard he was a constant danger to the
opposition.
Sorers: Aidan Mc Grath: 0-4, Eanna Murray: 0-2, Kevin Johnston and Aidan Fogarty
0-1 each.
Our Lady's now face Ard Scoil Rís in the final which will be played
in the next couple of weeks.
First and Second Year Basketball
The first and second year teams travelled to Thurles C.B.S. last Tuesday for
the regional quarter finals against St. Leo's College, Carlow.
The first years led by twelve points to four at half time. They continued to
defend well in the second half, conceding no further scores and while adding
another eleven points to their half-time score giving a final score of twenty
three points to four in favour of Our Lady's
The second years settled into their stride early and played some excellent
basketball. They were very much in control and led by twenty three points to
nil at half time. The second half saw a continuation of their good attacking
play and they ran out comfortable winners on a score line of thirty four points
to four.
Thanks to Thurles C.B.S. for the use of their new state of the art gym.
Both teams are now through to the regional semi-finals. The first years face
a long trip Mullingar to play Loretto on March 21st and the second years play
either Mercy, Tullamore or Heywood Community School later next week.
European Youth Parliament
Congratulations to Miriam Keane, Billy Kennedy and Conor Murphy who have been selected as delegates to the National Youth Parliament on the weekend of April 8th. Miriam, Billy and Conor were three of the eight students who represented the school earlier in the Munster Regional session of the Parliament.
Secondary Schools' Hunter Trials
Fifteen students accompanied by Ms. Tina Fogarty and Mr. Rory Purcell travelled
to Ballyhale for the Secondary Schools Hunter Trials finals. All students
performed well, with one of our teams finishing an impressive 14th out of
80 teams. The members of this team were Caitriona Kennedy, Damien Ely and
Pauric Collins.
Visit of Italian Students
On Monday a group of Italian students who are in Ireland as part of the Twinning
Programme visited Our Lady's. They toured the school and sat in on a number
of classes to gain some flavour of the Irish education system. It was an
interesting experience for the visiting students and the school.

Farm Walk
Fifth and sixty year Agriculture students attended a farm walk at Gurteen Agricultural College on Wednesday, March 8th. The purpose of the trip was to observe lambing in the 800 ewe flock at the college and to take a brief overview of the dairying, beef and equestrian enterprises. The students were given a very compreshensive tour of the sheep flock and learned about the management of the Gurteen flock from mating in July-August to sale of lambs in April-June the following year.

White Cup
The White Cup team had a convincing victory over a very determined Thurles
C.B. S. side at Templetuohy on Wednesday last. Our Lady's opted to play with
strong and biting breeze after winning the toss. From the beginning Aidan Mc
Grath stamped his authority at centre-field and supplied the team's forwards
with lots of scoring chances. Kevin Johnston and Eanna Murray did best and
together with Mc Grath, gave Our Lady's a half-time margin of 1-6 to 0-3. In
the second half Thurles stepped up the pressure and Denis Maher and Diarmuid
Fogarty kept our backs on their toes. All the backs performed well under pressure
but Pa Ryan from Clonakenny at corner back gave an All-Star performance throughout
the game. Thurles were unlucky on a number of occasions and had it not been
for the Cummins like saves of goalie, Dan Mc Cormack, we might have had a more
nail-biting conclusion. The final score of 1-12 to 0-7 earned Our Lady's a
place in the semi-final against the winners of Coleman's and Flannan's. Team:
Dan Mc Cormack, Pa Ryan, Liam Butler, James Butler, Pio Kennedy, Willie Ryan,
Michael Carroll, Aidan Fogarty, Aidan Mc Grath, Eanna Murray, Sean Mc Cormack,
Eoin Fitzpatrick, Pa Lupton, Kevin Johnston, Andrew Ryan. Scorers: Aidan Mc
Grath 0-6, Eanna Murray 0-4, Kevin Johnston 1-0, Aidan Fogarty 0-2.

White Cup Panel that defeated Thurles C.B.S.
First and Second Year Camogie
We played our final league matches on Friday against Presentation, Thurles
in the Sarsfield Centre.
The first years got off to a good start and were leading by six points to nil
at half time. They continued to defend well and only conceded one basket the
second half while adding eleven more points. The final score was: Our Lady's
17, Presentation 2.
Panel: Lauren Hogan, Kim Cummins, Edwina Clohessy, Martha O'Brien, Sharon Morrissey,
Nathasha Twamley, Katie Carroll, Laura Bourke, Ailish Maher, Sorca Hennessy,
Emma Maher, Doireann Fogarty, Lorraine Morrissey, Jane Tormley, Roisin Gilmartin.
The second years also played some great basketball and ran the fast break to
great effect. They had built up a comfortable lead by half-time. However, Presentation
fought back in the third quarter but were unable to make up the deficit. Our
Lady's ran out comfortable winners on a score line of 30 points to 14.
Panel: Maria Brennan, Maria Ryan, Sinead Treacy, Aishling O' Toole, Ailise
Bourke, Orla Fogarty, Laura Greed, Cassie Roche, Emma Russell, Melissa Ronan,
Grainne Bohan, Aine Doran, Aoife Laffan, Lisa Butler.
These results put both the first and second years on top of the group and into
the quarter finals. As a result we have a home game and are still waiting to
hear who the opposition are.
Transition Year
Last Wednesday, the transition years, accompanied by their science teacher,
Ms O' Regan, visited Limerick University to attend a lecture on the subject
of Engineering. This lecture was followed by a presentation entitled "Emission
Impossible", the theme of which was the damage done to the environment
by pollution and how the problem can be solved. All students found the event
informative and thought provoking.
Study Focus
On Thursday last first, second and third year students were given the opportunity
to attend a presentation on study skills by Study Focus limited. This was a
very valuable exercise for all students who attended but especially for third
year students as they work towards the Junior cert which is now only a couple
of months away.
Lenten Mass
Mass will be celebrated each Tuesday morning of Lent in the school library
at 8.40am. Students and parents are invited to attend this mass.

European Youth Parliament
Ireland
Eight fifth year and transition year students travelled to Cork on Friday to
participate in the Munster Regional conference of European youth Parliament
Ireland. Over a busy weekend the delegates discussed a range of motions on
subjects ranging from human rights to legal affairs. By Sunday evening, after
two hectic days, resolutions had been formulated and discussions had taken
place on all of the motions. The delegates from Our Lady's found the experience
challenging but greatly enjoyed working with students from other schools and
airing their views on a wide range of issues which will have great importance
for the future of Europe and the world. Our Lady's delegates were Conor Murphy,
Billy Kennedy, Miriam Keane, Mairead Ryan, Sarah Butler, Lisa Heffernan, Marian
Lee and Jack Carter.

Broadband
The school has just completed the installation of broadband which is now available
in every classroom in the school. While this offers great potential for improving
the quality of learning for all students its full potential will only be
realised when significant government funding is made available to upgrade
the computer infrastructure throughout the school.
Congratulations
Well done to the J.K Brackens Set Dancing group who won the Munster final of
Scór Na nÓg in Cork on Sunday. Seven out of the eight dancers
are students from Our Lady's. These are Martin Lee, Patrick Delaney, Eoin Bourke,
Ciara Ryan, Bernadette Bourke, Jenny Moore and Nicole Joyce. We wish them the
best of luck in the All Ireland Final.
Rice and White Cup
Training continues for members of the Rice and White panel. Both competitions
will get underway in the next couple of weeks. The Rice panel are working hard
and know they are under pressure to retain the trophy which the school has
won for the last two years. The White panel also are looking forward to a good
return from this year's competition. The school has only won one White Cup
ever so there will be great determination to do well.

and the surrounding area.
Harty Cup
Commiserations to the Harty Cup team which bowed out in the quarter-final at
Kildorrery against Midleton C.B.S. on Wednesday last. This was a closely contested
game with Our Lady's players showing the commitment that has characterized
all their performances this year. With only five points between the teams at
the final whistle our Lady's management team of Mr. Fogarty and Mr. Purcell
can feel justifiably proud of their charges. The absence of Johnny Ryan through
injury probably cost Our Lady's a place in the semi- final. (See Full report
in sport's section).
Cusack Cup Victory
Congratulations to the Under 15 footballers who won the Cusack Cup, U 15 A
Tipperary football competition when they defeated Cashel Community school at
Clonoulty on Monday last. The final score of 5-3 to 3-5 indicates how close
this game was, with Our Lady's under pressure from Cashel until the end. This
is only the fourth time in the schools history that this trophy has been won
so coach, Mr. Seanie Johnston and all the team can feel proud of their achievement.

The Intermediate "A" camogie team had a convincing win over Kinsale
in the league semi-final on Monday at Ballygiblin. Conditions were very good
for the match. Caitriona Maher opened the scoring with a point from play. This
was followed quickly by a goal from Siobhan Bourke and another from Caitriona
Maher. Templemore dominated the first half with more scores from Patricia Greed
and Ailish O'Connell. Kinsale got one point from play.

that no score went in. Templemore dominated the game and came out winners.

Week of January 28th
Harty Cup
The Harty cup team qualified for the quarter-finals of the competition on Wednesday last after Noel Mc Grath, striking the last puck of the game, calmly sent over a 65 to earn a draw for Our Lady's. In this thrilling game of hurling Our Lady's lads were a credit to their school and to Mr Noel Fogarty and Mr Rory Purcell who have developed this panel of players into a fine team of hurlers. Wednesday's success was all the more striking since it was achieved without the services of star player, Johnny Ryan who is recovering from injury. Team: Kevin Johnston, Donal Greed, Noel Doyle, Matthew Mc Grath, Shane Purcell, Noel Mc Grath, John Campion, G. Ryan, Shane Bourke, William Donnelly, Jody Ryan, Darragh Bourke, Shane Hennessy, Joe Lupton, Cathal Scully. ( See full match report ).
Medal Presentation
On Wednesday night Sean Collum, was the guest of honour at Our Lady's for the presentation of three sets of medals to the Rice Cup team, Corn Ui Chathain team and the winners of the 2005 Johnstown tournament. Sean congratulated all the medal winners and spoke of the importance of continued commitment to sport. He said he had fond memories of his own involvement in sport at the school between 1986 and 1991. Considering the achievements of this young group of players to date, he looked forward to even greater success at senior level in the coming years. The function was also addressed by John Costigan, Chairman of the Tipperary County Board. He spoke of his continuing interest in the school's G.A.A. exploits and he congratulated all those involved in promoting games in the school. Principal, Ms. Higgins praised the commitment of the parents and the dedication of all the members of the various panels.
Farm Walk
In preparation for the completion of their projects which make up 25% of the
final marks for the subject the 6th year agricultural science students travelled
to farms in Templetuohy on Thursday last where they conducted investigations
in relation to dairying, beef, crops, and the formation of raised bogs. One
of the most interesting aspects of the day was a visit to a crop of oilseed
rape which is being grown as part of a research and development project on
the viability of bio-diesel production from this crop.

Our Lady's students study a crop of oilseed rape on the farm of Tom Butler.

Week of January 14th
After a relaxed Christmas, staff and students of Our Lady's
look forward to a busy second term. Leaving cert and Junior Cert students
have just three weeks to complete their preparations for the "pre" exams
which begin on the first week of February.
The Harty Cup team is progressing well and still has one round to play in the
qualifying rounds of the competition. The team and management wish a speedy
recovery to Johnny Ryan, a key member of the team, who sustained an injury
recently.
Preparations for the Rice Cup and White Cup are well underway and expectations
are high since this panel of players have already carried off the U 15 Hurling,
Croke Cup and Corn Ui Chathain, First Year Hurling trophies since September.
The Whyte team play Bishopstown of Cork in the first round of the competition.
The Under 15 Footballers too have been preparing vigorously for the final of
the Cusack Cup which will take place soon.
The Camogie Players have a busy season ahead too. On Thursday the senior team
contests the Munster Semi-final of the championship and have also reached the
Munster final of the senior league. Later in the term the first and second
year camogie players begin their championship.
The Ladies footballers have qualified for the East Munster Junior final which
has not been fixed yet.
On top of all this the term promises a full programme of athletics and basketball.
Preparation of teams poses a particular challenge this spring as the major
project of replacing the asbestos roof of the gym has just got underway. Hopefully
the weather will be kind and training can go on out of doors.
Another date for the calendar is January 17th when Open Night will take place.
Week of December 10th 2005
Croke Cup
Well done to the Croke Cup team who had a 1-19 to 0-10 victory over Thurles
C.B.S. in the semi- final of the competition at The Ragg on Friday last. After
a tight competitive first half our Lady's were four points ahead and Thurles
C.B.S. showed no signs of wilting in the face a strong Templemore onslaught.
It was only in the second half that Our Lady's stamped their authority on the
game - largely through the efforts of players like Sean Mc Cormack who scored
1-5 and Aidan Mc Grath who contributed 0-9 to the total. Other scorers were
Pat Lupton (0-3 ), Eanna Murray (0-1) and Willie Eviston (0-1). Our Lady's
play Ballingarry in the final at Dr. Morris Park on Tuesday next at 1.30pm.
Team: Dan Mc Cormack, James Butler, Liam Butler, Padraig Ryan, Pio Kennedy,

eight years involvement in athletics' coaching at school and club level.
Senior Camogie Championship
Well done the Senior Camogie team who advanced to the semi-final stages of
the Munster championship after defeating Roscrea Community College on Friday
last. Friday's game was very tight at the start with both teams finding it
hard to score. Eileen Harty got the first score for Our Lady's in the twelfth
minute and this was followed by some great points from frees from Siobhán
Bourke. Caitriona Maher added another point from play and before half time
both girls got a goal each.
In the second half Roscrea staged a comeback, scoring several points. Alison
Donnelly and Sarah Hennessy contributed a goal each and Our Lady's finished
4-8 to 0-4 ahead of Roscrea.
Team: Norah Costigan, Caitriona Kennedy, Michelle Collins, Cora Costigan, Brigid

and Silver) at the National Cross Country Championships in Sligo on Sunday
last. Congratulations too to Jamie Moloney who won Gold and Bronze medals in
the Under 13 Race. Both athletes will represent the school in the School Championships
at the end of January.
Concern Debates
Well done to Gerard Adlum, Sarah Butler, Miriam Keane and Daniel De Burca who
had a majority victory over Ursuline Convent, Thurles in Round two of the
Concern Competition at Cistercian College on Tuesday last. It was an excellent
debate with both teams performing very well. In the end there was very little
dividing the teams but Our Lady's were glad to get the two points. We face
CBS Nenagh in the last league round on December 15th.
Harty Cup
Congratulations to the Harty team who had an excellent 1-13 to 0-9 victory
over Presentation College Ballingarry on Wednesday last at Littleton. In
a tight marking first half Ballingarry led by 0-6 to 0-5 at half time. In
the second half when Geariod Ryan moved to midfield Our Lady's took control
of the game and were seven points ahead at the final whistle.
Basketball:
The senior basketball team had a great win over Ferbane Community School in
the Regional quarter final of the Competition last week. Our Lady's led the
game from the start to finish and made full use of height advantage with
Siobhán Bourke and Deirdre Kiely getting some excellent rebounds.
The loss of Deirdre with a sprained ankle in the last few minutes caused
some nervous moments but Our Lady's held on to win by four points. The final
score was 25 points to 21.
The Cadet team was not as fortunate in its quarter final against Mullingar.
The team played very well in the first half and were only three points down
at half-time. The loss of Aisling O' Toole through injury in the second half
was a severe blow and Mullingar opened up a ten point lead. Our Lady's fought
back and cut the lead to three baskets giving a final score of 36 to 30 in
favour of Mullingar.
Ladies' Football:
Commiserations to the Ladies' senior football team who suffered a 4-12 to 2-7

on Wednesday 16th November. The venue for this was the Loretto Convent Clonmel.
Our u15 team of Ailise Bourke, Aine Doran, Maria Ryan and Laura Greed did
very well to reach to final. However they lost out in the final to a very
strong Loretto side. We had three teams in the over15 competition and Loretto
Convent Clonmel were the winners again. Our Lady's were represented by Amy
McDermott, Niamh Ryan, Charlene Sweeney, Daryl Ann Delahunty, Cora Costigan,
Mairead Ryan, Laura Fogarty, Ailish Egan, Michelle Carney, Miriam Keane,
Aisling Newe and Deirdre Kiely.
Basketball
Our final league match was against the Mercy Waterford and as we had already
qualified for the Quarter Finals, the result was of no consequence. Missing
one of our first due to a finger injury, we were very slow to get going and
were losing by 8points at half time. However the team fought back in the
final quarter and only for some wayward shooting, could easily have won this
game. Mercy emerged as winners by three points. Final score: Mercy-32pts,
Our Lady's-29pts. Team: Aisling O'Toole, Brigit Higgins, Aine Byrne, Vannessa
Witherow, Siobhan Ryan, Alison Donnelly, Catherine Leahy, Aine Doran, Melina

to Mary's excellence as a teacher, her open and friendly relationship with
her pupils and colleagues and her attention to detail which never ceased
to amaze all those who worked with her. Looking even younger than usual,
Mary told her former colleagues that already her days were filled with activity
and that she has not had time to miss school.

Beginning of the Year Mass

Forward in Hope". The mass began with an address by Student Council chairperson
Amy Mc Dermott. In the course of the opening hymn, "The Beatitudes",
there was a beautiful procession of students carrying candles, laying them
on the altar. They also carried a poster highlighting the mass theme through
artwork.
The responsorial psalm "Time for Building Bridges" was beautifully
sung by Nicole Joyce and Ciara Ryan. In his homily Fr. Dunne outlined all the
reasons young people have to be hopeful. He referred to the artwork which decorated
the pillars of the church and gave messages of hope. During the offertory procession
students presented personal items which for them are symbols of faith. A poster
carrying the names of all first years was also presented.
At communion Ailish Egan sang "The Cloud's Veil" and Padraig Heffernan
played a solo piece on banjo. Fiona Russell, Ronan Kenny and Gerard Collis
sang and played "I will be the Vine". The mass concluded, appropriately,
with the Mercy Anthem, "A better Way".
We thank and congratulate all students who took part in the mass, especially
readers, singers, and musicians. We also thank all the R.E. teachers and Ms.
Ann- Marie Johnson for her help preparing the choir.
